Question since all of you seam to have so much experience in this field our little Prinecess Prissy will be 6 months on July 9, 2012 should be have her spayed then or wait until she has her first heat. Sir Bentley is all set to go in on July 10, 2012 to be fixed and our Vet wants us to bring him home the same day. We're wondering should we do Prissy first and hold off on Bentley for another month or two. Just two costly to do both at the same time. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. |
You are absolutely doing the right thing! She needs to be home with you to watch over her. She will be fine though.............it's tougher on us than it is on them! :rolleyes: |

As to the OP's question, I agree with the pack, with a caveat of more information: When Eddie had leg surgery a few years ago, the board certified surgeon was going to leave him alone for the night. He defended the decision because he said the dog needed rest and quiet. Moving him would just get him excited or upset, he said. I settled on having him moved to a 24-hour emergency care facility to spend the night. That way he could rest, but experts would be there in case of emergencies. I wouldn't blame you for taking her home, but you might keep that in mind. She's just had surgery. Keep the environment as peaceful as possible and let the pooch rest. |

My vet always sends home after surgery unless there is a problem. I had a dog hospitalized for eating peepee pads and we had problems when we brought her home the next evening. She was so stressed. She will do better at home. Louise |

I agree with the others, bringing her home is best. As long as you have a plan of action if something should change with her overnight (unlikely, but there is always that possibility), such as an e-vet if needed. Just talk with your vet and be aware of what to watch for, as far as recovery goes. Oh, and I highly recommend a baby onesie too :) , besides looking adorably cute in them, :D, they are r good to help prevent her from bothering the suture site. Hth |

I did this with my Gracie although it was against everything I have done in the past. Years ago my Maltese puppy almost died from a uterine infection during her first heat so I have always wanted to avoid anything like that happening again. Gracie did fine though and she was spayed before her next heat. If you do wait to have your female done you are going to have to be very careful to keep her supervised at all times if she goes into heat. Females in heat that potty outside can attract male dogs from more than a mile away. That is a big danger to your little dog. |
Gracie Mommy thank you for the advise we have never had two puppies at one time especially brother and sister. Much less a boy puppy, because of the marking issue. Bentley sometime lifts his left leg, but when he pee it's not on anything yet. We are planning on having Prissy done in August she will be 7 months then. |
I am having Suzi spayed and a dental cleaning done in July 11. It is much more complicated for the female then the male, the male is easier to get fixed , just a snip here and there and it is over. My vet told me that he believes it it is better to wait until after the female is done with her heat cycle because eerything is all swollen, a female is in heat every 6 months. The vet would charge more money if the female is in heat or pregnant. Be sure to have the vet do a complete bloodwork before surgery to make sure nothing is wrong with your dogs, certain things like a blood clotting issue could cause death if they are not aware of it. They want to make it as safe as possible for your dogs surgery. Typically the male is going to be less expensive to be fixed then your female. Just be very careful that they do not tie , and a accidental pregnancy occurs, especially when they are siblings. |
I whole heartedly agree that its the best decision to bring her home. I can't see the reasoning behind leaving her alone post surgery:confused: I too would worry that something could go wrong and noone would be there to notice. I also agree with LadyJane to make sure that she has pain meds to manage her pain. With your tender loving care and being in a safe and comforting place recovery will be so much easier for the little doll. I don't know anything about glue vs stitches so cant weigh in on that topic. Glad to see that you obviously care so much about your little girl, she's in good hands :) Let us know how she is doing post-op. |
