electric fence???!!! my neighbors got a yorkie about a yr ago....just recently they bought a shihtzu puppy....she is 4 months old...they want to be able to let them out and run around....they had an electric fence installed a few years back for their Lhasa who sadly passed away 2 yrs ago....now they want to use these collars on their yorkie and shihtzu!!!! UGH! I can't talk them out of it...they just don't seem to understand this isn't a good choice for these little ones,...AND their yorkie is the most hyper dog I have ever seen!!! My fear is not only will another animal get to them but, their yorkie, being so hyper, will go through the fence and get hit by a car!!! we have had fisher cats, bears, coyotes and hawks around our neighborhood...not to mention other dogs that have been off leash in our yards...I am a nervous wreck over this..They make fun of me because I am such a lunatic about my furbabies...but....they are safe. OY! |
I try to explain that to people too and some just don't get it. We have been looking at buying a home in a gated community but they don't allow fences and a lot of home owners use the invisible fence so that's what was recommended to me. I really want to buy in this community but that is the one thing holding me back...it's just not a safe option for pets. |

When my neighbor did this, I called Animal Control. Apparently electric fences are illegal here as he took it down after AC's visit. |

nooo! yorkies and shihtzu puppies are to small for that that will like kill them! that is not necessary! and if there is like hawks and coyotes around there they cant leave them alone anyways they should be supervised outdoors and indoors at all times! thats not a good idea! you should call like a vet and ask them if its ok and then if they say no you sholuld tell that to the neibhors!! please dont let them do that! they should be supervised at all times! i was thinking about it too but then i realized it was NOT a good idea!!!! |
there is no use in my trying to convince them NOT to do this...I have tried many times to help them understand the yorkie breed...I am by no means an expert but owning 3 of them and researching the heck out of this breed before owning my first...I do know a little more than they do...when I try to tell them something I feel they are not even listening to me. My words fall on deaf ears. They are going to do what they want despite what I tell them. All in all they are THEIR animals and can do what the please....it just breaks my heart....Their yorkie is a good size...I would say upwards of 9 or 10 lbs....doesn't matter though...they just won't listen...that is why I post on here...it helps to read responses from people that agree with me. They have even left their yorkie tied up outside for a few hours while they were at work!! :eek: My husband even told them that wasn't a good idea...they haven't done that in a while...I guess I should just mind my own business... :( |

I'd be calling animal control on them any time they were outside loose. An electric fence is NOT going to keep them in if they see something they want. They will just take the zap and then won't come back because they don't want to get zapped again. I feel sorry for those furkids, they are doomed:( Bless you for trying to help them. |
What about the sonic fences? They make the dog stay by sounds. I never let my puppies out alone, so even if I had the sonic invisible fence, I always would go out with them. They can get snatched up by hawks or another dog coming in the yard to harm them, etc. They say that after a few times of wearing the sonic collar that the dog learns the boundaries pretty fast. I still am scared to buy one though. |
