Isolation..First Puppy Advice
 
Hello new to yorkietalk and looking for some advice with my new puppy.

George is 10 months old and I got him in the evening 6 days ago and he went for his first set of shots the following day. I don't want to take him outside yet until he has his second set of shots as I have read they can die and catch diseases. He is going back for his next set in 3 weeks...

The problem is I'm afraid he will feel isolated and unhappy here because I live alone, work from home and don't have many people who visit me and don't know anyone who owns a dog he can play with. He has gone for a car ride and to the vet that is about it. He has interacted with about 8-10 people or so since I got him. Is waiting that long to go outside and socialize under those circumstances going to be alright for that length of time or will be develop behavioural problems? I'm afraid he is also bored we play with his squeak toys and chew toys other then that he sleeps a lot or follows me around.

You can keep him plenty happy with the right tools. For example, trick training and obedience training: it helps stimulate his mind and it helps create a bond between the two to you. Games! Play hide and seek (if you can trust to him potty in appropriate areas), indoor fetch, tug.... Just be creative! Hide a squirrel, or a simple hide his favorite toy in a box can be entertaining for hours. :)

Yorkies are "people" dogs....they love being with their humans! (My Yorkies actually do not like "dogs"...they tolerate "them", but they would rather be strictly with me!) He would be absolutely the happiest little thing on Earth if he never saw anyone but you! He will be perfectly fine! Just keep him busy with his toys and games, etc. Learning new tricks when you are together will thrill him to death!

You can take him out as long as you carry him and don't put him down in places where other dogs may have been. That way people will stop and talk to you and pet him if you will allow. This way he can hear noises such as cars motorbikes horns etc and learn not yo be afraid of them.

10 months old? Where was he living before you? He never had any shots? I can't believe that a 10 month old dog has never stepped foot outside, so I can assume you mean 10 weeks, or he didn't come from a good situation or something?

I am one of those that don't follow the "keep indoors until shots are done" rule with pups. I can't even imagine leaving a dog inside until 16+ weeks. Jackson had already experienced sooo much. I would avoid pet stores and dog parks and things of the nature, and know if any parvo or such was common in your area, and just have common sense about it. But I wouldn't be overly concerned with keeping him strictly indoors. Though I'm not sure how it works for a dog that is a bit older (10 months) vs. a 8-16 week old puppy.

Do you have a yard? If your yard is free of other dogs then it shoud be safe to take your dog out to play. If your yard is not fenced you can get a light weight 25' tether to put him on to make sure he doesn't run away. Don't leave him out alone but you can run around with him and play fetch, etc. Gracie and I play indoor fetch quite a bit, especially when the weather is bad. If you have friends and family you can take him out to visit. Stay away if they have large dogs and or dogs that they do not take proper care of.

He is already 8 months old? Was he around other dogs and people during his first months? If not then he has already been deprived of proper socialization. A few more weeks is not going to make a difference.

He is 11 weeks old now.. Unfortunately I live in an apartment building.
