Pet Insurance I have 5 little dogs besides Zachary and none of them have Pet Insurance. Zach is my first Yorkie. After reading about all the health problems Yorkies can have, I was wondering if I should get health insurance for him?!?! Do you think is is a smart thing to do? If so, what company is good and what do you recommend as far as deductable and all that stuff. Thanks, Louise |
I would say definitively get insurance. One of my friends had a miniature pincer, and she got pancreatitis and a hiatal hernia, and they spent 12000$ for hospital and surgery because they didn't had insurance. I am also looking into this, trying to figure out which insurance is better, and I found this link: Compare dog insurance - Pet Insurance Review maybe it can help you. Also it would be very beneficial if someone has one of the top rated insurances (rated over 8) and can tell us more about it. |
Well, I have to decide on insurance and I am lost...I barely understand the human one, no idea about what should I look at when shopping for a pet insurance... So I did some quotes. - Healthy paws, 90% reimbursement, 100$ deductible, no limit on claims and here are the exclusions(page 4). I costs 40$ per month. What do you think? Anyone had any of these insurances and has some reviews? |
I ended up going with Healthy Paws and signed Zachary up with them. It is costing me $35 a month. How old is your dog? Zachary just turned five months and I think the younger they are when you sign them up the cheaper it is. I like the fact that they cover more for the same money as others, even a part if the cost if vet type dog food. That stuff is expensive. And they have no $$ maximum I did a lot of research too before making a decision. Healthy Paws seemed the best deal to me. Louise |
You want to read the exclusions rather than what is included. Genetic issues are a good example. I haven't looked at the insurance lately, but I was thinking that genetic issues are excluded???? And perhaps pre-existing problems. |

I am thinking with my next pup I will try for insurance too, some of the things I would look for; for a Yorkie, and some apply to all dogs. General: No increase in rates based on claims experience. No lifetime limit unless it is really large amount of $$ Say $30,000. 2. Prompt and timely payout of claim 3. No necessity to get every treatment pre approved by insurer. Genetic: All genetic issues are covered; and or a statement including any injury or sickness incurred over the lifetime of the policy. If they exclude some genetic illnesses; what are they? For Yorkies: Coverage for Luxating Patella - surgery and repair? Collapsing Trachea Hip Dysplasia and or Leggs Perthes Elbow Dysplasia? Autoimmune disorders? Also medications necessary to treat any of the illnesses above. Prescribed Physiotherapy treatments for diagnosed injuries. Coverage when travelling out of the country? Any specific performance events "excluded" from the policy. |
I have healthy paws on both Sophia and Brody and I'm very pleased with them. I will say that I just got the renewal e-mail today and it's going up about 5 dollars/month next year. So that's what you should expect in terms of a rate increasing. |
Ooooopppppppssssss, I got TRUPANION....i don't know what I was thinking. And, YES, they do cover genetic conditions. They have no maximum payout. It is the most comprehensive coverage I could find. Louise |
My other 5 dogs do NOT have insurance. When I got my sweet 'iddle boy, Zachary and read about all the potential health issues a Yorkie can have, I decided I needed to get coverage for him. I will be 65 in January. I had to retire early due to health problems and am struggling to pay COBRA till January 1. Money is very tight right now. BUT, I am not getting any younger. I decided it would be easier for me to pay $35 a month now than hundreds/thousands in the future when money might be even harder to come by. Louise |
I purchased PetPlan for Payslee over a year ago after she got pancreatitis and I'm really glad I did. Payslee got very very sick three weeks ago today. I honestly thought she was going to die on us before we could get her to the vet hospital ( the closest one to us is 45 mins away.) Her bill was 800 some dollars because they kept her over night. We pay the first 100 dollars and then they reimburse us depending on what the vet shows. My husband just told me (as I was typing this lol) that they are giving us over 600 dollars back. I am so glad I purchased insurance for her and that she is back to her normal self today. I think insurance is a good idea for any pet owner. |
Zachry's Trupanion Insurance Policy Here is what Zachary's policy says, the basics: Deductible per condition-$0 Coverage-90% Free ID tag for his collar No payout limits Covers-Diagnostic Tests, Surgeries, Medications, Hospital Stays, Treatments Doesn't Cover-Exam Fee, PreExisting Conditions, Welness/Preventative Care It costs me a little more than $34 a month. If you want more detailed information, PM me. Louise :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
Pet insurance is coming in here too in Italy. I really wonder. My three have had no issues until just this week when Sugar was found with hernia and little bumps on her stomach near her teats. We will do the operation on Tuesday and the dr will charge 500 euro ( abit over $650) he will also spay her and do her teeth. She is 9 years old as is her sister and this is the first operation we have ever had. They all have had issues with runny tummys so we have paid for xrays plus vacinations. I wonder if these would have been covered by insurance? It's a whole new world for me. Let me know what you discover.. |
Please understand with these policies the owner pays the vet bill and then is re-imbursed by the insurance carrier. |

The whole insurance thing is a crap- shoot, and you never really know what you have until you need it -- that being said after researching the policies I went with Healthy Paws for Cali. $35 a month. She is 4 years old. I understand from other that a $5 a month increase each year is the norm. I also keep a saving account that I add to each month for " just in case" stuff. Healthy Paws assured me that if something happens to me that her guardian could continue with the insurance - some other insurance companies told me the "new owner" would need to re-apply and that pre- existing issues may come into play. Just something you might want to think a out. I'm certainly no expert in all of this! |

Yep, with several furbabies that would be quite pricey. My former Yorkie got an encephalitis and cost me about $8000. With that in mind I decided that I never want my baby to lack for any health care so I bit the bullet with Healthy Paws. |
i talked to my vet when i got morgan and what she sugested was to take the money that I was going to pay for pet insurance and put that money in a savings account which i did |
I got rid of Trupanion beginning of this year. They upped his deductible by a LOT after his first year Even though they say they don't do that. They said it was based on vet costs In the area. I don't even take Riley to a vet In my area... I take him little over an hour away down near my parents house. So now Riley has his own Savings Account. whichs earns interest. I have been putting the $43.77 automatically in it, which is what I was paying Trupanion as well as an additional $50.00 each paycheck. Plus I have a credit card for emergencies. We recently had a middle of the night ER visit due to a reaction to his vaccination... His ER Visit was $171.57 $149.00 for the Emergency Exam… $22.57 for the Benadryl shot…. If I had still had Trupanion, I would have got a reimbursement of only about $20.00... |

I have PetPlan Gold and have been very happy with it. I got Lexie as a 5 year old, so it cost a bit more than it would have if she'd been a puppy. It paid for itself the first year after a 1,000 vet bill. I pay about $40/month, a $200 deductible with 80% coverage for everything except routine preventive care, dentals, shots, etc. They are very prompt with reimbursement, and do cover genetic issues & pre-existing conditions. I have no complaints at all. With several dogs, I can understand it gets kinda pricey. Good luck! |
Pet Insurance?? Hi Everyone.. This is very interesting. As I have a new puppy of almost 12wks I too thought I should look into it and wished I had before I got her. She came to me worms and needed medication. This caused her not to eat and she became hypoglycemic for some time. She was hospitalized over a weekend and I had a huge bill for this plus her meds and vet bill for the week she was seen. If I had taken it out I could have claimed for this time. Now I am wondering if Hypoglycemia as a young pup would be a pre-existing condition which they may link to something else she goes on to develop like Diabetes? Also yesterday she had been into my scrapping room and found a small piece of wood I collected on the beach. She chewed this up and may have swallowed some before I noticed. She had also over eaten as I gave her chicken. later I saw her hunched with her tail down. her tummy was hard. This could have resulted in emergency vet bills as I did have to phone them for advice. Would love to know your thoughts. Tks Ax |
I went with Healthy Paws also...they had really good reviews, hopefully will never have to use it, $100.00 deductible...I think it is 34.00/month. Small price to pay I think for piece of mind..of course you do have to come up with the money up front to pay the vet, but just knowing you will get 90% of it back is comforting...yes there are those who put money in a savings account every month as an emergency fund...but if something were to happen that could get depleted immediately, then what if something down the road would happen, and they have no savings left...I think an insurance policy is a good way to go... |
I have pets best from boise idaho been very happy, trupanion, pet plan are good and vpi is not rated very high |
I have a friend who has Trupanion and swears by it...she says they have paid some very large vet bills that she has had. I personally don't have insurance, but have thought about it lately because I am getting slammed with vet expenses. |
Insurance I just got Sprockets health insurance renewal info as the carrier had changed their "carrier" no changes for me, just the up-date notice thingy, I get Sprocket the wellness coverage every other year, which is the physical, shots, clean the teeth, blood work, you know, everything and that year we go all the time. The insurance has a "laundry list" of costs by the vet and almost everything that is on it is 100% covered with the exception of the spay/neuter which we don't need anyway. So for us it works well, we travel and and do not have to use any special vet or anything just pay for it and turn in the bill. I have a special credit card just for his expenses or the on the road expenses, which ever, so it never has anything on it. We use Pets Best Insurance they are out of Boise ID, their turn around time on claims is short and you can either call and speak to a live claims rep who is helpful or fax or email in your stuff, easy. I knew NOTHING about little dogs and was to the vet all the time when Sprocket first came to live with us, so I came to know the insurance ppls and the vet LOL. I hope this is helpful for you and good luck with your choices. |
