Owning a Yorkie-poo while working all day Hi, I am looking into getting a 9-10 week old yorkie-poo. My concern is that I work full time and will not be home for 9 - 9 1/2 hours four days a week and 11 hours one day a week. I do have someone who would be able to walk him once during the day for the majority of these days. Would that be an ok living environment for him? How often during the day would he need someone to walk / play with him? How often do yorkies like to go outside? Would I need to look into further pet care for him? I want to make sure I would be able to provide him with a happy and healthy living environment before I definitely decide to get him. His current owner said that the dogs go to the door when they need to use the bathroom and that if they don't make it outside they will use the pad by the door. I live in a one-bedroom apartment. Would a crate and a wee pad be the best way for me to train him? I would consider getting an older dog but wanted to check this option out first. I want to make sure I would be giving him a well-adjusted and happy living environment. Thanks! Debbie |
i work a 9-5 job and i got my puppy when she was about 4 months old. the best situation for me was to get a gate to block off a small section of the room for maxi. that way she is still getting exercise and isnt' trapped in a crate all day long.. :) this also helped train her go on her wee wee pad. when it was warmer out, i used to walk her in the mornings before i went to work. as she got older, i would move the gate so her area gradually became larger. when i used to let her run around the entire house, she would chew up all my shoes, papers, anything chewable! so you MUST baby-proof the house. ;) :yorkiesar :yorkietal |
thats the reason we decided to get two yorkies at the same time and with lots of toys. we have an xpen and crate connected so hopefully that should be enough room for them to play in. |
[COLOR=Indigo]Thanks Liz. That's nice to hear. :) That's a great idea to leave him in part of the room to run around in. Do you have anyone come in during the day to visit Maxi? Is she ok by herself? Does she get out much in the cold weather? |

I just wanted to let you know that since you live in an apartment if the puppy is left along for a while, it may start barking alot. Even though now I have 2 dogs, Brandy still barks, but not as much. Definately go with alot of toys and chew bones. Good luck. |
i figure if i walk maxi in the mornings and evenings, i don't need anyone to come during the day. sometimes i can bring her into work when it's not too hectic. :D i really haven't gone thru cold winter weather with maxi yet. i got her in april 05. i'm getting prepared by getting little booties for her and a nice warm coat. :) |
I wanted to welcome you to YT. I think that since you are planing in having someone to walk him during the days that he migh be ok. Just please dont keep him all day inside the crate.IMO 9 hours will be too long to be in his crate. Like others mention you can use baby gates or a playpen to give him a nice are where you can have the crate, pee pads, food, water and toys. Good luck on your decision. |

i use an expen i leave my 5 month ole alone for 7-8 hours a few days a week. he has my whole bathroom but i use an expen to protect my cabinets and to make sure he doesn;'t fall in the jacuzzi and kill himself. he has food, water and a litter box as well as lots of blankets and toys. he does fine on the other days he goes with me everywhere. good luck! |
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to be the dissenting opinion here. I think that it's too long for a dog to be left by themselves. I'm sorry, but I think that there's a good chance that your dog: 1) will be next to impossible to housebreak when you're gone that much, 2) will most likely bark all day (probably will start around 4 - 5 months), and 3) will likely be pretty neurotic because you won't have time to socialize him properly to other people and other dogs. If you could afford to send him to doggy daycare, I'd feel better about it. I don't think someone coming in to let him out once a day is enough contact with others. I'm sorry. You asked for opinions so I've given you mine. |
I have a yorkie-poo too :D When I first got Kelsey I lived right by my job, so I would drive to my house on my lunchbreaks to let her out potty and play with her. I am gone most of the day as well and work full time. I do have some help from my boyfriend though, he'll let her out (of her crate she stays in while Im gone or else she'll destroy things!) if I work over-time and feed her etc. I think it's a good idea to have a plan...if you have friends or family near by, give them a copy of your house key and ask them if they wouldn't mind helping you out for a little bit while your little one is a puppy...that is when they need you most! You can have the best of both worlds, just make sure it works out best for your future-fur baby! :D I wanted to add...this isn't a substitution for socializing etc. I do agree that maybe on the weekends you could make up for being gone so much during the week, this is what I do with Kelsey. Although, she is never alone as my boyfriend is mainly home when I'm not...but you get the idea of what I'm trying to say. :) |
I'd go for it!!! Most of us work during the day...that does not mean we do not love or give the attention our little babies need when we are at home with them!!! Make sure you take her for a good walk before you leave home and when you get back...and best of luck!!! :thumbup: |
Thanks so much to all of you for your great advice. I am very sad to say that I called the owner today to find out that he is now gone. :( This really bummed me out as I fell in love with him when I saw his pictures and spoke with the owner and was looking forward to having him as my own. When I spoke with the owner earlier in the week I told him I was planning to see the puppy on Saturday. Well when I called today I found out that would not happen since he was just sold. I guess it was not meant to be for me yet. I appreciate all of your information and am planning to continue to follow his great forum and to learn about yorkies until I am able to find one of my own. Maybe I\'ll find one who is a little older who would be able to better tolerate being alone for so long. I was already lining up people in my building who could stop in and visit with him during the day while I am gone. Well at least I will be better prepared for when I do find one.
