Introducing Myself and My TEAPOT Yorkie, Laney!
 

Hi there!
I just wanted to say hello and tell you all that I'm happy to have found a forum dedicated to Yorkies. I have what it seems people are referring to as a "teapot" Yorkie...her name is Laney, and she is a healthy, fit, and trim 11 lb. little (BIG) girl. :)

I will probably find some appropriate boards to post questions- Laney's a really well-behaved dog except that she does NOT come when you call her when she is out of the house. Inside...no problem. Outside...if she is not on a leash, she is GONE. It makes us very nervous, because if she gets near the door she wants to escape when it opens, and we live on a pretty busy street. Any suggestions? Her other vice is "snatching". She snatches things she knows she shouldn't have and takes off, hiding under beds and running around the house like a crazy woman. If we could break these two bad habits (not coming when called outside and snatching things), I think we would have the perfect dog. :aimeeyork ;)

I have two girls that DO NOT come when called either:rolleyes: My solution to this, to ensure their safety, is that I put an ex-pen up, surrounding the front door, and a baby gate on the side door to the garage. Any door that leads to unfenced areas is secure. I know there is training that can be done, but in the meantime safety first;)

As to the snatching, I think it is a Yorkie thing:laugh: I practically have to throw myself down on the floor to beat my Izzy to stuff. If I drop a piece of anything in the kitchen, she thinks it's bonus time. She's a little better than she used to be, we're working on it, just by firm UH UH and the Leave It command. Luna isn't that interested in anything on the floor and will bring me anything she finds, it's so cute:D

Hi! Welcome to YT- I love your girl’s name! Peanut use to be really bad with not coming when I call him (outside) I would never allow him outside because of this without a leash!

How old is your Laney? I know with Peanut he went through a stage around the age from 2-3 years. He is a lot better now, although he is really only allowed out in the front yard with no leash… Sometimes- We have a large grass area next to our house and we have Coyotes so he is hardly off leash for that reason.. Also you never know what is going to get them, sometimes with all the training they don’t listen and they can get hurt- Its better to be safe than sorry!!

My Gracie also used to try to rush the door when she was a puppy. She got out twice and I have to tell you I was thinking my heart was going to stop after getting her back. It is a terrifying experience to have your little one out there running like the wind! I started putting her on the leash whenever anyone unusual would come to the door. Repair people and visitors with kids meant Gracie was on the leash and not out of my sight. Even to this day I never allow the door to be opened unless I am holding her. She does not really rush the door anymore but she does love to have visitors and I don't want to take the chance that the door would be open long enough for her to slip out.

She also used to be a little thief. She would steal things off of end tables, out of closets and out of purses to name a few. I finally realized she really needed something to chew on. I do not believe in giving rawhide to dogs and I found out about bully sticks here. They have really solved the issue all together. She has a safe thing that she really loves to chew on and does not feel the need to steal things anymore.

You little cutie is just a typical youngster that requires all the puppy proofing you can possibly do for her.

Bella is the same way outside. She goes out on a leash and we live in the country. She has rushed the door a couple of times also. What an aweful feeling. What a blessing she will be to you and your house. She will be so fun to have around.

:welcome4: There are many more here with more training experience... but I trained my girls to come when called using training treats. I used a leash w/harness and treats to train them to know where I wanted them to be when someone is at the door.

both coming when called and not going out an open door without permission are important for her safety. There are plenty of threads here on training - whichever method you choose, be consistant and Laney will soon understand what you expect of her ;)

welcome. i too live on a very dangerous road. i have a porch and it is gated. that way if they escape the front door they cannot get off the porch. everyone is trained to be sure they close when entering or exiting. good luck hope you find a snatching solution.

This is a GREAT Forum, nice knowledgeable people, who will go out of their way to help in any way they can.

HA..snatcher... sounds normal to me. My two guys do that too, but they just hold on to "whatever" in exchange for a piece of Cheese Treat, before they give it up. :D

Remember, you got a Yorkie, and they were bread to be stubborn, and much of the time, recalls are difficult with them.

Do I hear "no back yard fence" ?
Some do what is called a "Run", where they have a Cable run overhead, between the house and a Tree in the back yard. Install a Roller Pulley with a leash on it, and it keeps our escape artists within a given space between the house and the tree. You might try that.
(keep in mind that using a Harness to restrain a Yorkie is recommended)

Hello and welcome. My Gracie was an escape artiest when she was a puppy. I had to get her on a leash whenever someone would come to the door or come inside. She once left with the cable guy that was working on our internet connection. I had put her in my daughter's room to keep her safe but my daughter let her out without telling me. Anyway, she could very well have died because her desire in life was to make it the full way up to the main road. The cable guy found her when she was almost to the road and he brought her back. She used to just about stop my heart with anxiety. She is 2 now and does not really try to get out anymore but I still take precautions to keep her away from the door.

She was also quite a destructo as far as chewing went. She did not hide under the bed or anything but she would steal things out of purses, closets and any place else she could find something to chew. I started buying her 12" bully sticks and have not had an issue with chewing ever since. I know how scary these bad habits can be since they are both very dangerous. I hope your fur baby will find other safer things to do.
