Teething and congestion Just found this out and as someone who doesn't have kids I wouldn't have known. Tufty is now 18 weeks and this week became quite nasally and sounds congested, he had some snot. Talked to my vet and he advised at his age he is teething and just like human children it can manifest itself in nasal congestion, nothing is required it will pass. He is a healthy pup with a healthy appetite and fabulous poopability and very playful. Does get a little exhausted and sleeping and just wants a hug. Teegy never had this issue so I was unfamiliar, but my sister was telling me it happened with her kids and you just have to let it run it's course. I know there are a lot of newbies on here and hoped that this advice and information would be best shared so we don't all go crazy with worry. I guess when you've been a vet for 50 years you've likely seen it all or very close to it. He said if anything should change in his status to get back in touch. So far it's sleep snort, snuffle, chewing on anything nearby like a madman, thank christ for good chew toys (which he and Teegy are now wrestling over) |
That is great info, thanks for sharing. |
I thought it important to know Joyce, I knew it was nothing awful because of his appetite and energy and poops being fine but still you don't like to hear them sound like they can't breathe. I did give him a 1/3 of a teaspoon of benadryl to aid in clearing his congestion, but the vet's and my breeder's re-assurances made me worry less. You never stop worrying |
While I have certainly had my share of teething babies I have never had a puppy have that type of reaction to teething and I have raised a few over the years. How long did the vet think it would be normal for your puppy to be congested? |
no word on how long, just said it will run it's course, but if I see any changes that concern me give him a shout. poor muffin, but yet he's still a wrestlemaniac, just one with snuffles |
So just a follow up on this. Mr snuffie Tufty is all cleared up, the congestion lasted about a week. I did get some essential oils and put them in a diffuser for during the night so Tufty with his congestion and me with my allergies had a better night of it and it's passed. I bought eucalyptus and myrrh which are both good for congestion and respiratory ailments. You can also use ravensare or silver pine. |
