Help please! I have a 3yr old yorkie and we did had a 17 yr old dachshund who passed away about 2 1/2 months ago. My yorkie came here when he was 5 months old and my dach adapted to him, not quickly but surely. So I wanted to get another dog for my yorkie and I decided on getting another yorkie but an older one that is trained and I found one and he is 2yrs old. My 3yr old is such a scary dog, if u drop, hit, crinkle paper etc he runs in the room. He does not jump up on anything but does jump down such as sofa, chair, stairs. He will not go on leash, if u call him he comes slowly and then turn his back to you for u to pick him up. He has been that way since we got him which is 5 months of age, the breeder I got it from is very loud and mean so I am assuming its from that but didn't think he would remembered that such young age. Now the new one I took in is 2yrs old due she couldn't give him attention. He is much smaller than the 3yr old and he does everything, goes on leash, jump up sofa, stairs, go fetch his toys etc. Totally different than the 3yr old one. Last night for the first time I have never seen my 3yr old snap at anybody but he did to the 2yr old. I need to know what can I do to make them both like each other. They are both males and my 3yr old is fixed but not the 2yr old. I just cant remember how it was done when I brought my yorkie home to my dachshund even it took time but u have to remember my dach was old too so had a old and young and now both young. Please help I really love both of them. I need to know what to do? |
Hi and Welcome to YT! My sympathies on the passing of your Dachshund. Sometimes Yorkies learn things from each other. The fastest way to get them to bond is by walking them together. Try and keep trying with your 3 year old... he may follow the 2 Year old. Good Luck with them and let us know how it's going... |
Thanks but one problem, my 3yr old does not go on leash at all. That would be great! |

Where did you get the 3 year old from? From the behavior you described... it sounds like he was used as a stud at some point in his life.... is he bonded with you? |
Wow your oldest sounds like my Lizzie. She came from a great breeder but she is shyer and more sensative. She had a rough patch when we got Abbie she was really sad. She agent from baby to middle child. I have a senior a teenager and a baby. My oldest adapt well to Lizzie and Abbie. I just do things with all three together. I alway give Lizzie extra attention when the other two play with their dad or human siblings. It is 2 mints in and I hope Liz gets.past this. Just try keeping them engaged together Abbie hated her vest and leash at first would sit her but down and not move. Then she started going with her sister and loves it |
What are their names? |
To answer most of the questions....First the 3yr old is Jersey and the 2 yr old...I haven't decided yet but the owner had named him Posh...thinking of Jock, Jockey, or Josh. Ok the breeder I got the dog from is Jersey, I deal with her buying her goods for me to sell at my Arts and Crafts Shows and we befriended and I have grown to know her as a very tough French woman. She is in her 60's and she gave me Jersey at the age of 5 months old. I have several clients I deal with that also deal with her and she is know for her straight level woman and tends to talk very loud and if you dont understand her she get very frustrated and even to her husband whom we feel sorry for. So I'm thinking this is why Jersey is so scary of everything and I mean everything. Thinking what can he remember at the age of 5 months old and maybe he does. Now tonight (Posh) jump over him in a way and Jersey again wanted to attacked him which I had never seen that in him at all. Yes, I have tried the harness on him, and yes trying to give him a treat to make him move, NOTHING. However he is overweight and should be at 3 pds and he like 7 or 8 pounds and the breeder even gets angry with me on that. Now I have chosen to meet the breeder else where to get my goods from her rather have her come to my house. |

Oh my! Jersey needs to be on a diet! Extra weight is very hard on their joints and organs. Good to ask your vet for a plan for getting him to reduce his weight some. As for them getting along... be sure to give Jersey alot of attention... I know everyone wants to play with the 2 year old, but Jersey's feeling may be hurt. My Peek a Boo will attack when he feels he's not getting enough attention from me. Do everything for Jersey first, unless he gets worse then switch it up, but try it for a week or so. |
Just a suggestion for leashing does your baby wear a harness at all if so half the issue solved, if not put it on for shor periods until she's comfortable with it next attach a leash let her drag it around then let her walk with you, after a bit do short walks around the house getting her used to it I had to do this after I noticed a rehomed to me dog was completely confused by the leash and walking with one so he'd just lay down if he was leashed and refused to walk. |

I found the easiest way to leash train is to just follow them and not tug or pull. They get use to the harness and leash this way and then after a few days of this, just gently tug in the direction you want them to go and say something like lets go, or come or what you want in order to get them going. They don't like to be forced, and will bulk at that, so gentle does it. ;) |
