I first started wanting a yorkie after getting to know our vets two yorkies Eli and Izzy. Eli is a teapot and Izzy is a itty bitty little girl..who has such attitude. She rules the roost and I fell in love with her spunk and personality. The moment I saw Jada well actually the moment I was asked if I wanted her as she is a rehome my vet arranged..I fell madly in love. She is my heart and I have never felt this way about a dog before. Bogie we got so Jada would have a companion and it was the best decision we have ever made...they are both the loves of our lives. |
My very first Yorkie was Spencer. I bought him from a Pet Store in the Mall in 1988. Back then I didn't know about Puppymills. When he passed away at the age of 8, I knew I wanted another. So total in all I have had 11 Yorkies, and the majority of them have been rescues. I have only purchased 3 of mine. Only 3 of them of are still with me all rescues. |
I did not chose a Yorkie, she was given to me as a birthday present from a dear friend (rest in peace Sophie Lynn), Then I could have no other breed. I love my furkids as if they were my own babies. |
After a year into my relationship with my husband (then, just boyfriend), he convinced me to get a boxer and I loved him although he shed a lot, required a lot of clean up and exercise. When we moved to a house, we got him a boxer companion which I adore as well. They are 7 and 8 years old now and absolute joys (Tiesen and Lennie). My DH and I got married a little over 2 years ago and have been trying for a baby since then. We have gone through the ringer to try and get pregnant (you know the deal)! Through many sleepless nights, fights, etc., I thought my world was coming to an end. In January, we decided to go on a house hunt to redirect our energy and I met the cutest female Yorkie at a house we were looking at. I became so infatuated with her that I did not pay attention to the house at all!!!! She sat on my lap and played with me and I could not stop thinking about her so I did some research on the breed, begged my husband for a Yorkie and found a great breeder. Here we are!!! :D:D:D I must say that there has never been a day that I regreted my decision even though I have 3 dogs, am going to graduate school and work full time as a teacher for children with special needs. Max has turned out to be the best dog I could ever imagine to have and has even helped me get over my baby fever. He is going on 8 months old now and can sit, shake, roll over... all of it!!! He is completely potty trained and has very few behavioral issues (for the most part). I attribute his greatness to many different things. 1) Yorkie Talk!!! 2) His great big brothers 3) Yorkies being a superior breed 4) I love him soooooo much that I see no false!!!! ;) As long as I live, I will always want a Yorkie. I think there is something special about a person's first Yorkie though. I cry even thinking about the day that Max will go to rainbow bridge. Quite frankly, this site has helped me in so many ways but I'm so paranoid reading all the horror stories on here. Anyway, I am truly thankful for all the support and knowledge all of you offered me and I truly believe Max is so much better off because of this site! Thanks all!!! |
As a little girl I was terribly afraid of dogs after being severely bitten, but wanted to be a vet when I was older. I always had cats, they are my first loves. They have a special place in my heart. I saw my first yorkie when I took a dog quiz on animal planet, t see what breed would be the right one for my lifestyle. Well after that I started researching EVERYTHING yorkie. All about them. I was obsessed, but I was merely 15 or 16 years old. I forgot about it for a while. I graduated HS, went to college, decided my major wasn't right for me, and didn't go back for my 2nd year. I had been dating my bf long distance, he was a yr older and went off to school in TX. I moved from SC to Texas just this past November, and I was very lonely. I wanted a cat to keep me company, and I begged and pleaded, but one of our roommates was allergic to cats. And so...I remembered, YORKIE!! I saved up my money, found YT and started reading all about them, really dedicated myself to knowing everything I need to know. Bf said it was okay, so we took the plunge and after looking into numerous breeders, I found Manuela...:) She is Neersyorkies on YT and she is AWESOME. I LOVE her!!! On my 20th birthday we visited her beautiful home and met her breeders/retired yorkies, and she had three litters born in Jan. I decided I liked Luma's mommy the best...her name is Nicky and she is beautiful, silky, 8lbs and CH bloodlines. Nicky had two puppies..Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton :) We chose Dolly and the rest is history! I am so so grateful that I found this breed, it's perfect for us...Luma is everything we could want and more. She is our life now. I already want a 2nd..but that's another story ;) |
I grew up with two shih-tzus as a kid after our lab mix passed away. I fell in love with the size and the fact that they are non shedding. I knew I wanted a small dog that would travel well and I looked into the maltese and yorkie. The deciding factor was that I thought I would have a hard time with the tear staining that the maltese can have, so I decided on a yorkie. Now that I think of it... my decision was pretty superficial, but I don't think I could have chosen a better breed :D I love their spunky and energetic nature but also that they are able to go everywhere and I am not constantly cleaning up their hair. I don't think I'll ever own another breed. |
I fell in love with the Yorkshire Terrier one day when I went with my hubby to one of his customer's homes. He was there to collect his final payment for the dock he built. Anyway, this man was a veterinarian and he had the most adorable little girl Yorkie, Muffin:love: I could not tear my eyes off of her and that started my love for Yorkies. I didn't get one right away, as we were renting and you know how that can be. Very unstable here in Florida, a lot of landlords don't allow pets, etc. It was a good ten years until we finally bought our own home. I got my first girl Starr soon after. A friend of ours had a cousin staying with him, and the cousin's girlfriend. The girlfriend had a female with a litter of 3 or 4 (can't remember, I only had eyes for Starr). She was asking $300 for her and we were going to get her in a couple of weeks. Our friend called the next day and said come get this puppy now, forget the money. Turns out that she wasn't cleaning up after the dogs, and she was letting the neighbor kid play with the puppies and one got dropped and hurt. He couldnt' stand it and knew the pup would be safer with us, as the ditzy woman didn't even get the puppy vet care:rolleyes: I wanted to take all the puppies, I swear, but knew it would be too much for us. We lost Starr just shy of her third birthday, and I knew we had to have another someday. DH got Luna the very next day, he couldn't wait!! I then demanded we get her a companion, as I feel our Starr was very lonely at times. I love this breed so very much, and I will always have at least one Yorkie in my home and heart, as long as I can properly care for them:love: |
Oh - so darn cute, full of attitude, smart as a whip & the best of the furry cuddlers I could find with that soft, soft coat. |

I was not even thinking about getting a puppy at all until one night I was looking at pictured of them on the internet. I found a breeder about 1 hour away and call her that night. She's said she had 1 male left and he was 14weeks old. We went the next day and got him. Talking about spur of the moment. Well that was in November and we all just love him more and more every day. He is 10 months old now and he is trained to pads or he will go outside. He is our little baby. For us not to know anything about yorkies I feel like I know everything now. I have really done a lot of reading about them. I wish I got him sooner. |
I used to spend my younger years in the care of a friend of the family, she was practically my 2nd mother. I was really young. She was a manager of a hotel in town and we would always be at the hotel, swimming or playing in the arcade. The owner of the hotal had an office in the center of the hotel and you would barely ever see it. you had to go through other offices to get to it. Getting to the point... one day i saw the most adorable, precious little dog. ( i was an extreme animal lover.. always have been)I ran over excited and she was just so shy, hauled her little butt around the corner and through the offices, down the little hallway and right into the owners office. She had practically a throne in there! THIS IS ALL ABSOLUTLEY 100% true... She was SOOO tiny, and just beautiful. the owner who ill call M.V. found me back there trying to coax her out to come play, haha. He wasnt upset at all, he introduced me to her, her name was L.A. ( which i later came to find stood for Lady Ashley*which is my name, but named after his neice) I spent many days playing with her and wishing for a Yorkie of my own. I WAS IN LOVE. its strange because i was such a tom girl(still am) but i just loved this little fancy, princess of a dog. as time went on and i got older, things changed and i no longer spent time at the hotel. I NEVER forgot her and as soon as i was on my own and financially stable i got a yorkie..my pheobe. To add to the story which is such a fond memory of mine.. When searching for teh stud for my pheobe i found a lady named diana. She lived right here in town and WAS A BREEDER.. for 17 years!!! ( i had not found her when searching for my first puppy because i was living in south dakota at the time). I started talking with her and come to find out.. SHE WAS THE OWNER OF L.A.!!!!! NO LIE!! her husband is the owner of the hotel. I was so excited!!! AND to add to my excitement, LA was still alive. Along with the excitement of getting to breed pheobe, i got to be REUNITED with LA, the yorkie that started my love for the breed. It was wonderful!! Words cant even express. Sadly, earlier this month she passed. I spent hours on the phone with Diana consoling her. It was a really hard time. I knew Diana fairly well through the breeding process, but to have her choose me to confide in in such a hard time was such a heartwarming experience, i mean, very sad, but it was just very emotional and i couldnt beleive that i got to see her a few more times before she passed. Ugh, im all teary eyed.. Yorkies are just one of a kind dogs. I cannot begin to explain the connection and devotion. I just love each and every one! |
I didn't choose my first Yorkie... He was "delivered" to me... A woman ran into my office with a small dog asking if I recognized him. She also asked what town she was in. Apparently Marley was running right down the middle of Hwy 11 in Jefferson with no regard for traffic. Her husband parked his F150 crossways in the Highway and she ran out and got him. They were on their way to North Georgia to be with a family member having surgery. Long story short, Marley came to live with me. I had NO intention of getting a dog... But he is the kindest, gentlest, loving dog you could ever imagine. THEN... I decided he needed a playmate... and got Max... our 6 pound Pit Bull wannabe! Marley might have wanted a puppy, but he didn't want THIS puppy. Max is adorable... but he's a HUGE problem... He bites... he bites anyone who steps on my property! I am beside myself... I am trying to get him some counseling and training. |
I have shared this story before, but I've so enjoyed reading all your loving tales, I'll share again. So serendipity seems to be at play here in many of our stories. Well mine is; my trainer of my Black Russians is Ilona, who is also a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers. So for 3-4 yrs here we all are training together; our group of Blackies, Plus Ilona's Yorkies. Twice a week, I got to look at those wee doggies, doing what the big ones could, and sometimes better!. We;d also go to conformation and obedience shows together. Up until that point hubby and I thought of small dogs, with the derisory term of "ankle biters"; no interest in them at all. Well BBQ;s and hanging out with the Yorkies, plus the Blackies slowly began to change our minds. Well to be honest mine first; as hubby usually wasn't present during training sessions. No ankle biters with her feisty crew! My admiration for the breed was growing. One day relaxing after a show, having a fun group BBQ, one of Ilona's Yorkies, just up and jumped on my lap! Oh My. And she had to jump over Magic my big boy to get up on my lap! No fear, no shyness, she just curled up on my lap and well my heart melted. So late fall when Ilona was over for dinner, I announced I'd like to get a Yorkie!. Silence at the table...teehee. I'm not sure who was more shocked hubby or Ilona. At the time I thought my sister who had been asking for a small dog for her own, would be fine with a Yorkie. How-ever I also knew I wanted an agility dog, and really knew I was prepared to pay for all the training, the vet care, and if she lost interest, then the dog would be mine and no problem for me. So we talked at the table more, why I wanted a Yorkie (for agility), and for Judy my sister. But still I would not have gotten a Yorkie unless hubby agreed. NOr would Ilona sell me one either, she said you two talk it over, and have Dave(my hubby) call me. lol. Apparently they actually did talk, something I didn't know for ages. What-ever he said convinced her that he was on board with the idea. Placement of a dog especially with a large dog owner family is really important to Ilona. We went over our house with a fine tooth comb, as I showed her my preparations to take in this wee one. Well at least wee in terms of relative size. So she does have a litter on the ground. They were about four wks old at the time of our dinner talk. So ants in my pants here, I say, well what do you think? They are now six weeks old, I've not seen any yet, but I know the Mom, and I've researched the sire. Is there one here that you think might do for agility? She looks at me and says well, yes actually two and they are males. Oh phew I said, I love males! She smiled and said I know. You can visit on Sunday to meet the pups! Oh boy oh boy oh boyo! Seven wks old, I come and am aghast! Oh dear these pups are so so tiney. Remember I've only seen "adultish" Yorkies, competing and training in obedience rings. I see the whole crew 5 puppies, interacting with each other. We sip tea and watch. Of course Yorkies being Yorkies, they have to come over to investigate. They tumble around my feet. Ilona says have you seen enough of the group. I said yes. She removes the two females from the pack. Now I know, I'm watching the three males. They wrestle n tumble with each other. She says to me, which two do you like? Now we are looking at structure, and personality here. I pick two. She smiles and says YES, one of those two I have in mind for you. Then the "kicker", would you be willing to show the Yorkie if he turns out? Both pups were show promise, with great structure and temperament, and would be more 6ish lbs. A larger dog which you do want for agility. I said of course, for sure, but you know I know diddley squat about showing Yorkies. No problem I will help you. Which she has done, over and over and over again. So we are down to two. I've watched, I've looked, I've picked up the two males. We have some more tea. After the second cuppa, both males came tumbling back to my feet; I pick up one and pet him, cute boy, calm in my arms. I pick up Razzle, and he gives this big sigh and cuddles into my chest; my heart leapt! He was the one for me. We have never looked back. My multi champion and GCH Razzle. |
I had grown up with cockers and mini schnauzers and was used to smaller sized dogs. Back when we were dating my husband fell in love with the family schnauzers. They were his first time being around dogs. We knew they would have to stay with my mom when we got our orders to Germany because they were super seniors (11 and 13 years) and just too fragile to make the journey with us. In Germany I really missed having fur kids running around the house so we started looking for schnauzers of our own. Low and behold the husband and his friends had each been selected for deployments and one of our friends (a couple) needed a puppy sitter for their yorkie Honey. He was deploying and she had to go home to get everything set up for their move back to the states. (They had less than 20 days after he got back to move). Since I had tons of experience with small pups I said I would take her while they were gone. It was a rough deployment for me for sure. Lost use of a hand, lost my grandfather, heat went out of the house during winter, I was newly married, and I was living in a foreign country where I knew no one and had only been there for 3 months prior. That amazing lil fur butt somehow kept me sane and comforted me. I'm not sure how I would have made it without her there. My husband finished his tour early and he got to come home and experience having a yorkie running around our home. After having her live with us he decided then and there that we would only have yorkies! After searching for a bit a friend of a friend was active in the yorkie community in Germany and knew of a breeder trying to get rid of a "runt". She drove two hours each way to pick up the pup just so we could meet him because the breeder didn't feel comfortable with strange Americans in her house but was willing to sell a "runt" to Americans. It was LOVE at first sight. Teddy crawled all over us and even hopped into my purse as if to say lets go home mom! |
