Please Help!! Toby looks like he has dandruff. I brush him or pet him and all of a sudden he has little white flakes all over. I feed him Fromm and bathe him with yorkie splash and shine. His coat is soft but not very shiny kind of dull. What can I do to get rid of this. He scratches a lot but not constantly. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you for all your help. |
Bogie gets like that sometimes in the winter. It is usually dry skin. I give him coconut oil on his breakfast and it seems to help. |
Make sure you rinse all the shampoo out, and maybe bathe less often? I saw flakes on Calvin before, and it wasn't dandruff, it was shampoo I had not rinsed off good enough! |
It could just be something minor like the above posters said. Hypothyroidism can also cause skin issues too. I thought I would mention it just as a fyi just in case it doesn't clear up. |
I had the same thing happen with mine using splash & shine..went away as soon as i used another shampoo |
Hi, I use YSS and had that happened before so make sure you rinse well. Also could be food related? When Sheldon was on Now he was very itchy and looked like he had dry skin, I decided to put him on a single ingredient grain free and no potato diet, he eats Natures Variety turkey and the itchiness has stopped. I was also giving him treats that had oats, threw those out too and replaced them with dehydrated turkey. So who knows if it was the potatoes or the oats but he is doing really well avoiding both. Good luck! |
And it could be something simple...how old is he? If he is small like your avatar photo then he could be at the age where Yorkies 'blow their coat'. Which means he is in transition from his puppy coat to his adult coat...their skin gets dry and looks dull and they will lose some hair. Is he shedding too? This stage usually hits between 6 and 10 months of age if I remember correctly. Good luck...I hope that's all this is :) |
You may want to try a shampoo that has oatmeal mill it. mollie had terrible dry skin when she was little. If you call your vet they tend to carry in my opinion better shampoos than you can buy online or at the store. I wish I could remember the name of what they gave her but she is now 11 and grew out of it. I agree is she is tiny tot like my Abbie who is 4 months old sheis itchy, but she is blowing her puppy coat. I brush her several times a day and that seems to help and I give her wet wash cloth whip downs between baths that helps remove the hair. |
you may want to add fish oil or canned tripe to his food and see if that helps as well oatmeal shampoo, I use earthbath |
coconut oil is sooooo good for them |
If it's from the lack of oil in his diet, then add some Omgea fatty acid. I use the NOW brand gel caps, I also use flax oil, & olive oil. I just change around, not use all of these at the same time. ;) Mine also get hot oil treatments once or twice a month, especially in the winter months when we heat the house. I even give hot oil treatments once in awhile during the summer as well. |
Hot oil treatments I wanna be your yorkie |
with ziggy this was caused by dry skin, coonut oil solved that for us |
I don't know much about Fromm. Is it grain free? Sometimes grains can cause issues. The various forms of omega 3's are excellent for skin and coat problems. Coconut oil seems to be very popular. I use the YSS products and have never had an issue with Gracie's skin or coat. She does excellent with it. |
When I brought my four year old home I noticed her coat was very dull and she had white fluffs of dandruff and was itchy. After a vet check we decided to see if she had a food allergy. Since I've had her on the hypoallergenic food from the vet it disappeared and her coat is shiny again. |
