Getting a New Puppy! We are getting a new Yorkie puppy!! We already have a large dog (Grady). Grady is almost 4 and we got him when he was 2. He grew up with a Yorkie before he came to live with us. I have two daughters, 9 and 6 years old, as well. Grady is such a great dog. He is SO well behaved and never barks, tries to escape etc. We are really excited about getting a puppy and my husband grew up in a family of dog breeders, so we do understand the time and attention the little one will need. I know Grady is great with small dogs. I am not really worry about that. The thing I am worried about is that I have always had large dogs and I associate small dogs with biting and yipping. I know that is not true for all dogs and there are PLENTY of large dogs that do not behave well. (many are my neighbors!) I was hoping to get some advice from Yorkie owners about behavior traits, training...things like that. Especially from someone who has young children, like we do. I Googled it and every site said NEVER get a Yorkie with small kids. I just know you can't trust all sources. My daughter's father has two pitbulls and they are the nicest, most well behaved dogs I have ever seen and MANY people think they are vicious dogs. So... I want some advice from the people who know! :) Ps... I have already enrolled the new puppy in Puppy Kindergarten classes. We are getting him this weekend :) Thanks in advance for any advice! |
Teegy loooooooooooooooves kids, I think it's more for the safety of the dog because little kids aren't careful with them. Each dog is different which is the awesome thing about Yorkie's, so personality traits is about the individual. With persistence they are easily trained but are very stubborn and think they are a big dog, very faithful and loving. My dogs are not yippy or barky, but they do have conversations with each other which can be loud at times, but I'm laughing so hard at them it's not a bother. And welcome |
get them loads of toys without plastic eyes and things to chew on |

As for the Puppy Classes, please make sure it has all of it's before being around other dog's, since you didn't say how old it was. |
We have a 75lb Boxer and our sweet Georgie. They do great together. When I had my son who is 4 years old Georgie wasn't overly excited but has come around;) As far as yapping let me know what you find out. Georgie is almost 7 and still yaps but I know that's because Mommy and Daddy are so well trained instead of the other way around LOL |
Thanks for all the info. I think he is 11 weeks old right now. I don't know when he needs shots again. I have never had a puppy, so this is all new to me. When I go to get him tonight I will talk to the current owner about all that. I did not think about that when enrolling him into the kindergarten class, but they have classes going on all year. So, I can wait for sure. I am going to buy some toys, food supplies, and a crate now. I am sooo excited and plenty nervous too!! :D |
Get ready because your life will never the same again in the best way:D Our Boxer is almost 13 and we love her so much but I can attest to the fact that there is nothing like the love of a Yorkie;) |

Now you know you gotta post pictures when you get him. We love seeing pictures. |
I got a second dog and didn't use the crate because then they are separated my two sleep together and everything |
Congrats on the new baby!! |
Bet you are super excited. Yourkids Are old enough to learn how and when to handle the puppy safely. I think it's more young kids that can hurt the yorkie accidentally. My two are almost 5 months and love kids. Lily is very gentle even with youngsters. They will grow up together and be best friends you are so lucky. |
1 Attachment(s) Well, we got out new puppy!! (can't decide on a name yet) He is so sweet. Grady has responded well and the puppy just wants to play with everyone. I have been trying to get him to go to the bathroom outside, but have not had any luck. He is in his crate sleeping now and I am going to try to listen tonight to see if i hear him moving around so I can get him out to go potty. I have been so nervous all evening because I am so afraid Grady is going to squish the puppy. But, so far, so good. I am also afraid of Grady not getting all the love and attention anymore. Reminds me of when I brought my youngest daughter home from the hospital and thinking my oldest would be jealous. My girls have been really good with him too. My youngest knows she can not pick him up. If she lays on the floor the puppy just crawls all over her and licks her face. It is so cute. He really loves my husband, but when the puppy climbs on him he bites my husbands lips and ears. He does not do that to anyone else. Maybe my husband just tastes better! :p I do not know how to put a picture, but I am going to try to attach it. It is not the best picture of him, but it's the only one I have so far. Tomorrow I will bring out the camera!! Thanks everyone!! We are so excited. |

2 Attachment(s) The first night went well. I didn't sleep well though. I think most parents have this ability to half-sleep when their babies are young. That is what I did last night. I put the puppy's crate by my bedroom door and listened so that I could try to get him out to go to the bathroom. At 2:30 AM he was crying a little and I brought him out, but the grass was wet and he does not like that! He did not go potty in his crate, so that was good. He did go potty in the backyard... so we were happy about that. No accidents... yet.:) Here is another picture. He is so sweet. He wants to play with Grady all the time, but Grady really loves to sleep. It is so cute. |
He is so stinkin cute! Georgie was the same way with Coco. She just wanted to sleep and be left alone but Georgie wasn't having that;) |
