Copper just ate gum
 
Hubby left a blow pop wrapper out with the chewed gum and stick in it. Copper got a hold of it. We made him "drop it" and picked it up, but we think he ate the gum. It was the sugar kind...is this going to cause a problem? Anyone know?

I am not sure. I have been searching the internet for you and have only read that some contains something that can be very harmful to dogs. Could you call the ER vet?

Wow...thank you. I know about the gum that contains the bad stuff. That stuff is deadly. I was hoping someone had experience or knew about the regular kind. I can call the ER vet. I will go and do that now. Thank you again.

I think regular gum will pass through... it's the sugarfree gum containing xylotol that is dangerous and will drop the dog's bloodsugar level in a heartbeat....

That gum inside one of those blow-pops is really rather small piece, PLUS it isnt sugar free...sugar free is the killer!! I dont think you have to worry about anything...that little piece of gum will pass and there are no chemicals that are toxic, since it is regular gum.

Thank you so much to you who replied to this thread. I did call the ER vet. You all were right. She said as long as it wasn't the xyletol (spelling???!!) one, the gum should pass through fine. :)

This is good to know. I will be watching Copper anyway. Hubby eats blowpops by the truck load...I think he will be more careful with the wrappers from now on...but you never know. This wrapper was on a table tray. Copper climbed up the recliner and then onto the tray to get it. What a stinker! :rolleyes:

Watch out for anything sugar free, including the little bags of artificial sweetners....I had to watch my brother like a hawk when he came for a visit...he is not used to having a "toddler' around that has to be watched every second...he drinks his coffee in front of the tv, and there on the tv tray, I see a couple bags of artificial sweetner! Same thing at every meal with his iced tea!!!! And I have a "mountain goat" that climbs up onto the recliner and will sweep the end table or the tv tray for anything delectable she feels should be included in her diet for the day!

Lynn, I think Copper should be alright. Romeo used to eat gum as well :D and he LOVES blow pops but we only let him have the "candy" part. As long as it was not sugar free all should be well.

We don't even have artificial sweetener in my house. Anything.
I do know the dangers of the one kind. Amazing that it is so deadly to dogs. Makes me wonder what the chemical does to humans in the long run.
Nope, no fake sweeteners here. We are sugar junkies!:)

I don't blame you for panicking, I would too. You never know with these little ones. My girlfriend's dog ate some Pannetone Bread and almost died, had to have emergency surgery and the whole nine yards.

Now I want a blowpop in the worst way....!!!
