i need a yorkie I come on Yorkie talk every day, mostly just lurking around , to look at all of your beautiful babies. My work schedule doesn't allow me to have one of my own and I refuse to get one of my own if I can't give her all the love and attention she needs. When I retire I will have my own baby! But 25 years seems like forever! |
There are alot of people who work and have yorkies. Im glad you come here though even though you dont have a yorkie of your own |
I work, 8 hrs a day, and still have 2 Yorkies. Most learn to adjust to the schedule right away...When I do stay home they ignore me and act as though I'm invading their space!! They sleep all day and party every night! Mine are litterbox trained so in the rare event I am late they are fine and don't go without! I remember when I got my second pup, I was home on sick leave for shoulder surgery...I got up each morning and pretended to leave and closed the door to their room! right down to setting the alarm and tiptoeing around till 430pm!!! I train them from the get go! |
Yes but my drive to work put an extra 2 hours on to my work day. I'm afraid to trust a puppy or even an older dog with someone else . I will have to just enjoy all of ur stories and pictures . And keep learning about the breed |
So glad you are apart of the forum:) I have a Yorkie, Boxer, Skin son and full time job. While I do work from home often even when I didn't we figured it all out. I think the biggest thing is being there for a couple of days when you bring your Yorkie home. Or at least having a plan in place for feedings ect.... |
Litter box training is a good idea! Quote:

Another option that I have used before is doggy daycare. I mean I don't think it's reasonable/cost effective to do it everyday, but if you plan on doing litterbox/pad training it may be an option just so he/she gets socialized. However, if you did get a little one and he/she was home by her/himself for a long period of time, keep in mind that no matter how tired you'll be from your long day at work, you'll still have this little ball of energy that will demand your attention! ;) |
you could still have one. lost of people work and have yorkies!! |

What a God gift they are to us. Our girls help to brighten each and every one of my days, when I am tearful they are right upon me to kiss away each tear. Our Dear Cassie did that too, they are such a wonderful breed. It is nice to have you at YT and hopefully you won't deprive yourself of being without a Yorkie when your heart really desires to have one, you would make a wonderful skin Mom to one. Hugs, Patti and Jack |
Thank you, I guess I could but I would worry all day. And my husband and kids I know would love her but I just don't think I could trust even my husband to watch out or every little thing that could happen. Or her running out the door. Just thinking about those things makes me cringe. Someday maybe I can make him understand that they are just like babies and need to be protected. |
I work full time, I start at 5am and finish at 1:30pm...I leave my house at '3;30 am and I'm home by 2:15...she has a playmate to keep her company , but for the first three months she was alone...I was worried sick, even though I have a grown son living with me, you never stop worrying ( I know I dont) but they do adjust to your schedule. You would make a great mommy, but in the meantime welcome to yt! |
Welcome:D!!! Yorkies sure are special:) I hope that you won't have to wait that long to get one for yourself. Unless you go out of town for work a lot, you could make it work. It might even be good if you were to get an older rescue instead of a puppy, so that you could whizz by all the puppy worries;) There are plenty of Yorkies out there waiting to find a forever home. Whatever you decide to do, it's nice to have you here! |
You could definately have a yorkie and still work I work usually between 45-52hrs depending on the week. I do make sure to give them lots of love and attention when I get home and hate going out after work when they've been alone all day. Although I did get my yorkie and then my pomerianian 3 months later. Together they are alittle tag team and keep eachother very busy. Both of mine are trained to use the "pottypatch" during the day. I cant imagine not having either of them because of work. |
Another working momma here. :) Play pens (expens) are an option for while your at work. Keeps baby safe from getting into trouble. There are lots of items that can be left to keep them busy during the day, and litter box or piddle pad training in case they need to answer nature's call. Daycare a few days (2-3) a week once the pup is fully vaccinated can be fun for them and very stimulating. I wish I had a good daycare near me. Kaji would love to play around with other dogs. |
Honestly, the only way it couldn't work and it would be completely unfair to the pup is of you couldn't or wouldn't be able or willing to integrate your pup to your downtime schedule. If you're not willing to spend time after work, and on the weekend with your pup, then and only then is it not worth having a dog. (general you, not anyone specific :)) I understand the occasional outing where the pup can't tag along, but for the most part I think it's completely doable. Kaji goes shopping with me, out to lunch with friends, on family trips, and on and on. As long as you can make comfortable accommodations for them when they can't go, it can workout. I'm actually really sad about my upcoming trip. I wanted to take Kaji along, but the airline doesn't allow pets. :( Kaji will be staying with his godmother, and her pup, his BFF Uni. |
Thanks everyone! I think I was having a little pity party for myself. I actually have had a Silky Terrier who came to me a a 4 year old rescue, Coral, She is my avatar pic. She unexpectedly passed away last August. I miss her so much it still hurts. She was the perfect dog for my situation. She loved her crate. She would wait by it in the morning for me to let her in. She was so special I don't really need to tell ya'll how strong of a bond is made with these little dogs. I still sleep with her favorite toy at night. After she passed i rushed into getting a Yorkie that a family member was "done breeding" Her name was Hope she was 7. She was perfect also. (they all are) She wasn't taken very good care of she came to me with heartworms, enlarged heart, and LP. We got her the heartworm treatment and we were told that with cage rest most recover very well. However it was just to much for her. 3 months watching her go down hill was agonizing. I hated being away from her during the day even though my husband was home for the most part of the day. I know we did all we could for her but it stills hurts to think about her. I knew what would happen I would have to have another one, I need another one. But I was scared to lose another one not just me but my husband too. I have never seen a dog melt a grown man's heart like a Yorkie can. I knew he was hooked the day I watched him give Hope a zerbert on her belly!! Unfortunately, I put myself in a situation where I would not be able to get a Yorkie for a long time. I knew I would have to have another one and I was afraid to put my family thru the heartache again so we adopted a beautiful German Shepherd that is 2 about 5 months ago. This Shepherd was given up by her pervious owners because she killed the small dog that she was raised with. Don't get me wrong she is the most loving dog there is. But some have a prey drive and she is that one . I knew when the rescue group told me about her past that she would be able to help me keep the promise that I made myself , not to have another Yorkie until I am in a position to be home with her. And as long as Vada (our shepherd) is with us there is no room for my Yorkie. I know that probably seems like a drastic move but that is how scared I am at losing another one. |
