Alternative to heart guard chewables? Today is KS'S heart guard day and for the past few months I've been having trouble getting her to chew it. She just doesn't care for them. It took about 20 minutes but I got her to chew all but a pea sized amount. I know the box says you should try and get them to eat all of it but she is just not having it. Do you think her not eating the entire thing will be ok? She's 5 pounds. Is there another way besides chewables? I'm going to talk to our get but thought I'd ask here too. Thanks for any input! |

You can buy iverhart tabs , they are very small. Ask your vet about that. Also revolution which covers heartworm plus fleas ,ticks, internal parasites. That is what i use for oscar. Never had a problem |
Jackson won't touch stuff like that either. We use Interceptor which is a pill, I just wrap it up in cheese or something and hold his mouth close, and he gulps it. |
I used to use Heartguard but the vet switched to Interceptor, Yoshi and Prissy take them really well. |
Mine refuse HG too! We now use Revolution. |
Sugar doesn't like her HG either, but I just hide it in her food. I home cook, so it's a little easier to camouflage :) |
Wow, my two LOVE the heartgard. I give it to them like it's a treat and they go crazy! I have to break it up into four or more pieces, but they love it. If KS doesn't like the chewable, there are pills. Do you have issues getting her to take pills? |
The Heartgard I have says it is for dogs up to 25 lbs. So if your 5 lb dog ate almost all of it, surely she is getting enough of the medicine? My vet had me put Eevee on Advantage Multi, which covers fleas and heartworms. You put it on them like Frontline, it's very easy. |

Bella won't take them alone. I take a teeney peice of whole wheat bread with a smear of peanut butter and roll the pill in that. Squish it down and roll it around. I make her do a trick and give it as a treat. Waalaa...it's down and she's good for a month. Good luck. Hope this helps. |
Interceptor is currently not being produced. They will probably resume production in a few months - so if you use it and your Vet still has some, I would recommend you buy a few months supply. I use Interceptor and love it. |

This reminds me of my two, they absolutely love it! I was so glad I found one I didn't have to trick them into eating. Before this I used the pill wrapped in melted cheese. |
Thanks guys for your input. I did call the vet and they told me about a pill we can use. I am going to switch to that next month. They told me I did need to try to get the full dose in her, so I ended up taking the pea sized amount we had left and smashing it up with my fingers to itty bitty pieces. I then mixed it in with a bit of yogurt. I was sure Katie Scarlett would lap it right up. She loves yogurt! Wouldn't you know that little booger took a lick, swirled it around in her mouth, and popped the medicine part back out! I had to laugh! So I ended up getting my husband to hold her and I put the yogurt near the back of her throat and we held her mouth closed for a second while she swallowed. I hated to do that, but it was all I could think of. She takes pills much better when they are hidden in cheese so I think the pill will work better for us. :) |

badbonneeblue's mom With my last dog, I wrapped it in velvetta cheese and she gobbled it down. Question: I have a new Yorkie puppy - three months old - weighs 1.4 LBS. Is it safe to give Heartguard to a puppy this size? The dosage is for dogs up to 25 pounds. The possible side effects listed are awful. My vet says it's safe, but I'm worried. |
