New owner/new member Hello folks! My name is Teresa and I'm the owner of a Yorkie for the first time. I adopted Moose - a male Yorkie - at the end of March. He's quite a character and amazes me every day with his antics. I've owned different breeds before: beagles, American Staffordshire Terrier, mixed terrier breeds, german shepherds and mutts. Moose was born 11-21-10. I had him neutered even though he is bure bred as I do not plan on having puppies (been there, did that, don't wanna do it again). Moose has some strange behaviors; lately since his surgery he's been jumping in the shower with me... He's a very smart little man and can do many things. He does have some guarding issues and growls alot at my neighbors even though he's met them several times. Any suggestions, comments, clues from you all would be marvelous. I want to be a good pet parent. Incidentally, we have a cat named Tabitha who was feral as a kitten but has come around nicely. She is strictly indoor and just turned two at the beginning of the month. She too is fixed. They come nose to nose but haven't "bonded" yet. Thanks to everyone for being here. I do need answers and help. :) |
Hi and welcome to YT! My name is Theresa too but I spell it with the H. The big advice I can give is that I think a lot of people make the mistake of treating yorkies like babies. Things that you would not let a big dog get away with, people ignore with their yorkies. I think this is a big part of the problem with housebreaking and I also think it's a problem with barking and even aggressive problems. So my big advice would be that while you don't correct your yorkie harshly and certainly never hit them, you don't ignore bad behavior either. Immediately address it even if you have to excuse yourself from that conversation with your neighbor because this has really got to be tops on your priority list. But having said that, i think there is nothing better than a Yorkie so most of all enjoy him, give him lots of love and know in your heart that he only want to please you! |
Just wanted to welcome you to yt! :) |

Hello and welcome |
Welcome to YT :) |
Hi there and welcome... |
Welcome! I hope you enjoy it here, I do :) I don't know how to help, but my pup has learned how to jump in and out of the bath as well. Have you tried teaching him 'sit and stay' while you're in the shower? As Dexter likes to follow me everywhere I bring him a toy in the bathroom so he can play in peace and not try and jump in with me lol Also, he has met all my neighbours in the flat I live in and he still growls at them...maybe he thinks we own the whole building, I don't know. |
While my yorkie and cat do co exist, they have never bonded. But than again, they were both seniors when they met. Your furbabies maybe close enought in age to bond. It does take time. My furbabies are not the best of friends but at least they don't try to hurt each other. I love seeing pics of yorkies and cats snuggled up together. No such luck with my little ones. |
