Anyone Get Giardi from your YORKIE???? Hello, I have a question here As Anyone ever got Giardi from their Yorkie? My Bella is being treated for Giardi for the second time around. The Vet said she is a carrier the stool-sample states. I have had Bella for around 8 weeks or so, and she is fine and healthy other then that stool sample saying Giardi. I have come down with a stomach bug for about a week now with a sinus infection. My doctor thinks I may have contracted the Giardi from Bella. I am so careful and clean like there is no tomorrow.... My Question is has any HUMAN on here caught it from their Yorkie, and if so what did you do? Thankyou all so much, I love this site always information I can use :o) |
This will explain in detail. There is much more to the article than just the paragraph below, so please read it in full.:) Giardia in Dogs: Diagnosis Treatment and Prevention Guide Can Humans Catch Giardia from Dogs (Zoonotic)? The strain of giardia found in humans has been found as the source of infection in a limited number of dog giardia cases. For this reason, there is some risk that giardia can pass from human to dog. If a dog is infected with a human strain it could theoretically pass back to humans, although this is considered to be rare. Because of this, proper hygiene should be followed when handling an infected dog. Always be careful when disposing of feces. |
Thankyou so much for replying. I really dont understand this Giardi thing but my yorkie seems fine and she is being treated with Panacur for 14 days, I am so good about washing everything...dont think I ever used my washer this much since I got it. I have another Yorkie and he was tested negative, but was treated anyways. I hope we rid this thing out of our house.... Thankyou again so much for helping me :o) |
Do you have well water by any chance? |
bumping for reply? Wondering how you are doing? |
usually from parasites in water and it is communicable to humans a friend of mine contracted it on vacation and was devastatingly ill. Maybe ask your vet about probiotics to encourage a healthy flora in her intestines. I have also been told the giardia test can produce double negatives. My friends dog tested positive and he spent the $100 for meds and then the other vet at the clinic told him the dog had giardia when he had just finished all the meds and his other dog was 100% clear. it was obviously wrong because he did not get a second dose of treatment and 3 years later the dog still hasn't showed any physical symptoms |
I am doing fine now, I believe it was the antibotics I was given. My Bella shows no signs she is sick whatsoever... I often wonder if those tests are correct alot of the time. thanks for listening :o) |
Hopefully yorkieusa has informed you on the human/animals communication. I do know that your dog can easily become reinfected if the area where it defecates is not cleaned properly inside and out. All your baby has to do is step in the area that is still contaminated and she can get reinfected. Try using the kind of disinfectant that kills Giardia where ever she goes and keep her as clean as possible. |
