Impacted Nail, Then Infection...
 

I thought I'd go ahead and tell you what happened to Avery this week. Yesterday I brought him to the vet for a routine nail clipping. The vet noticed a nail that happened to grow significantly quicker than the others and parallel to his pads. When she clipped the nail it was impacted into the pad and caused severe pain.
I got home today from work and his entire leg was wet... he literally spent hours picking at it today (even after she put some sort of glue on it). He then decided that wasn't enough and matted his hair by/on his paw to make himself MORE miserable. I immediately called the vet and what we didn't think was so serious turned out to be a nightmare. The vet ended up shaving his paw to reveal that he had bit open his pad and the flesh was exposed-- possibly leading to infection if not treated. After almost tearing off the nail himself, Avery is now on 3 antibiotics and is sporting a puppy bumper.

Lesson learned to all you Yorkie owners out there... after your pup gets groomed, check EVERY nail to make sure none were skipped.

Lesson 2 learned, if your pup's nail doesn't grow right and this happens, prevent your pup from irritating it more. If I would have thought he was doing damage, I would have never let him "lick" (at least that's what I thought he was doing) all night.

Just thought I'd share-- it's nothing too serious, but I could have saved a decent amount of money if the little stinker decided not to pick at it!

Sounds like it hurts hope he heals and it feels better really fast.

After a few rounds of antibiotics last night and this morning, his paw looks 100% better. We are taking Clavamox, Surolan, and Metacam-- incase this happens to anyone.

I am glad he is doing better.

So glad that you got him help, he must have been hurting to have done that much damage to it, bless his little heart.
