Yorkies home alone Have enjoyed all the posts and advice shared on this forum. I'm learning a lot!! We are planning to adopt a rescue dog (2-4 yr. old female) - either Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, or Yorkie. I just keep going back to the yorkie because they are so darn cute and fun!! Both of us work full-time, so the dog would be alone mon-fri 8a-4:30p -- in a gated off breakfast room (tile floor) about 10' x 12', with french doors looking into backyard, crate, puppy pads, food/water, lots of toys, and radio playing. We would of course give the dog LOTS of love, attention, walks, and play in the evenings and weekends. I've read other posts on here, that Yorkies in general can do OK if left home alone -- I do know the ideal would be for a dog to be around his owners all day, but we can't be the only people who want to have a small dog, but must work outside the home. I'd love to hear from any who successfully make this work -- and if you encountered issues with the dog (again, an adult dog) chewing up woodwork/trim or becoming anti-social from being alone. (note that getting two dogs is not an option at this time, but down the road would like to have two dogs). thanks for your advice!! |

hi , welcome and congrats on your soon to be new addition. Sorry i wont be much help in the advice dept though as i have 3 dogs and i am a stay at home wife but when i lived on my own i had dogs and they stayed home alone while i was at work. They were all pefectly fine. Like you said in your post the dog will have a lovely room , can see outside into the yard and have all he needs. Honestly i do think two dogs keep each other company but if that is not something you are able to do then i believe as long as the dog gets plenty of attention and exercise when you are home he will be ok. |
Hello and welcome and soon-to-be-congratulations!! :D I, too, am at home with Harry all day (or he's out with us!) but our last dog (Rosie the labrador) was left at home during the day while we worked. It worked very well for us - apart from my own guilt. She didn't bark, or chew, or do anything naughty - but I must admit I would never do it with our Harry - he's a totally different character and I know it wouldn't work...but that's just him, not all Yorkies  Plus he's that much younger. What we did do was organise for someone to come in every day, at lunchtime - really just to break her day up and spend an hour with company. Either my daughter would come home from school, or there were a couple of neighbours I could get involved, or I would pay a pet-sitter...:) I hope it all works out for you, bet you can't wait! ;) Sally + Harry x |
It can certainly work fine. Lots of people do that. They do need LOTS of attention, and of course would choose to be with you 24/7 if they can, but as long as you are able to spend lots of time with them outside those hours if should be fine. If you are able to run home on lunch break, its even better. And welcome to YorkieTalk! :-) |
They are fine home alone that long as long as you dont expect them to hold their pee all day and give them a potty pad which it sounds like your doing so your fine |
Hi there and welcome! I too work outside the home...5am til 1pm, Raelle does have company (Orion) but she was on her own for three months before i got her brother...she was fine, when i got home she was patiently waiting for me at the door. boy when i came home she was soooo excited to see mommy....jumping, spinning doing a little jig, it was like i had been gone days not hours! She still does this even though i may just have gone upstairs for a minuite. Your little one should be fine, be prepared for when you get home though..they become your shadow! again welcome! |
im sure all will be fine and welcome |
Brandi is home alone during the day and she is fine. In fact, she doesn't even walk me to the door anymore.:p After breakfast and potty, she goes back to bed or she watches me get dress while in bed. Sometimes she might sit and watch the cat eat hoping she drops something on the floor. It did take some time for her to reach this point. When I first got her and would leave her alone, she had some anxiety and would not stop pacing. I had a webcam setup so I knew what she was doing all day. Gradually As she got more comfortable in knowing I was coming home, she began to calm down and eventually she just started to sleep most of the day. My suggestion, get a webcam you can access from the internet. That way you can gauge how the little one is doing and make the right adjustments. |
She will be fine. My two are home alone from 8-12 and then 1-2 everyday and sometimes have accidents. Usually they will use their potty pads, but I just don't expect them to hold it that long. I know I go to the bathroom several times/day, so I don't expect my little guys to be able to hold it that long. It sounds like you have a great set up for her, and as long as you are okay with accidents... She will be fine. I always just make sure they get lots of exercise and attention after work and on the weekends. We go to the dog park, go on walks, play fetch at the school down the street, and go on lots of trips in the car. My two are some of the most social dogs I know, and they have a great life. Good luck with your new little one :D |
I work with fosters and rescues so, first I want to say thank you for wanting to give an older dog your love and a good home. I wish we had more people that would do that. It seems like you are providing a good safe environment. Before we retired, we set up a web cam so we could check in on our(2) Yorkies, We were surprized that our dogs sleep almost the whole time we are gone. Now that we are retired, one of us is home almost all the time (now we have 5 dogs LOL) And they still nap most of the day. Your new baby will adjust. Best wishes and Welcome to YT. |
webcam and internet? Yavenay, How did you set up your webcam so you can view it from somewhere else? I want to do than and spent last night looking it up, but I didn't find out how to do it. Can you please explain in detail? Thanks. (my webcam is in my laptop) |
thank you all for the encouragement and info! I know it's just guilt on my part! Love this forum - it's one of the reasons I'm leaning more towards getting a yorkie rescue dog - because I know if I have any problems or issues, I can get advice from experience Yorkie owners here! :) |
Oh dear I am sorry I haven't got a clue how they set up the web cam. That was about 8 years ago. At the time, my son's friend who was in home security business did it for us. Maybe that would be a place to start. I know Doggy Day Care and Pre-school and day care use them too. Maybe some one on here will know and can help you out. Hugs |
If you have an iPhone there is an app called icam that you can download on your phone and them download the program on your laptop with your webcam. This program allows you to see video and hear audio. I do that, although I'm not sure I should because my baby cries on and off the entire time I'm gone. I had to catch a plane the other day so my friend came over to stay with my baby bit she was alone for about 4 hours before my friend got there. I watched her until I had to shut my phone off, needless to say I boarded that flight in tears because my baby was crying. It absolutely kills me to hear her cry even though I know she's okay. |
Thank you for posting this thread. My new yorkie (getting him in a few days) will be home alone a few days a week, when I am not taking him with me to work, or to my aunt house (who would love to have him anytime). People are so quick to bash others who have to work, and maintain a living to provide for their babies. Thank you to everyone who gave positive reinforcement, this makes me feel better already. Like I can do it:) |
