Potty training to outside ! hi , oscar is 8 months old now and since we are into warm weather i have decided to try and potty train him to go outside exclusively. Although he is tiny at just 7 pounds he will not be forced to hold it because i do not work so i will be here to take him out. My question is i guess how difficult will it be to transition him to going outside? I know that there are a lot of members here whose little ones are outside potty trained... Any tips & advice appreciated |
I'm not sure I'll be much help really, as we trained Harry to go outside from day one.... Of course you know by now when little Oscar's triggers are. When we were training Harry, when he did wee-wee's or poo-poo's on the grass, we would say "good wee-wee" etc., hold a small party, give him a treat, and then take him in :) He got the hang of it really quickly (by that, I mean he was completely house-trained in about a fortnight). Being at home really, really helps of course. Even now, if we're somewhere that he's never been before and he does his business, I still say "good wee wee, Harry" - people look at me as if I'm completely nuts :eek: but I guess it's just a habit I've gotten into....:D Good luck! Tufty is only 15 weeks old and both he and Teegy go outside. I'd say just watch him and when he makes signs of sniffing for a spot or going to the pad, grab him walk him to the door, put him down and walk out making him follow and don't come back in until he does. Be sure to reward and praise him It comes down to patience consistently and praise |

Same here, Sheldon has been going outside to potty every since we brought him home with the occasional accidents. Oops! Does he goes on a pad? has he ever gone potty outside? |

Would it be worth putting a little grass in his litter box? Or taking the litter box out onto the grass outside? Sorry, just a thought....:) Sally + Harry x |

Sorry, I was just presuming about the grass....:) As everyone goes there - it'll probably be easier for you to teach him? It'll be full of other potty smells (however well we hose stuff down!) and he'll follow in his siblings footsteps (or pee steps!) - hopefully! ;) :D Sally + Harry x |
I don't have experience with this, as both my boys are potty pad trained. I think I read somewhere though, that to go from pads to outside, every couple days you move the pad a little (like a foot) closer to the door you will be going out. Eventually it will be right by the door, and maybe then you can put it just outside the door? |
