I have a new puppy....Help! Milly is seven weeks old.....How do I house train? |
yikes!! #1 your have her 5 weeks too soon!! ok, so now that thats out of the way..be very structured.. Outdoor or potty pad training?? Big question.... Mine are potty pad trained, so before I give anymore advice, answer that..... |
I want her to be an indoor dog....but I have been taking her outside to potty and she does great. At night she sleeps in her kennel but she is waking me up 2 to 3 times and I take her outside and she goes. During the day I Leave her with a potty pad and the kennel door open, but she doesn't go on the pad...everywhere but the pad. she does not go in the kennel. So my question should I leave her in the kennel all day? I leave at 7:00 am and I am home by 4:30. |

"Yorkies For Dummies", "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" Get these books immediately, and start reading. Have you ever had a Yorkie before? Has your baby been started on her shots yet? Have you had the baby to the vet for a check up? Do you have a contract with the breeder? Do you have a health guarentee in that contract? Good luck with your baby....Your breeder let that baby go so she wouldnt have to worry with the expense of vaccinations, etc....this is how some breeders keep their overhead down. Unfortunately, babies between 4 weeks and 9 weeks are the most vulnerable to disease and life threatening medical issues....watch your baby 24/7 until it is at least 12 weeks old...you are that poor little sould momma, and any and all nuturing and touchy-feeley stimulation is now YOUR responsibility....and this is all stuff that must be done in order to keep this baby on an even keel when it is older....good luck with this, sweetie.... |
I agree with the others, your baby should still be with her mommy but she's not so You HAVE to be sure she eats every couple of hrs & do you have NutriCal on hand incase of Hypoglycemia ? if not , get some Now as if she goes Hypoglycemic you could loose her before you are prepared. How often is she eating & how often is she going poo ? did you buy scented or unscented Pee Pads ? & as mentioned, Do Not put her down anywhere but in your home & your back yard where other dogs have not been as at this time she is highly susceptible to disease until she is FULLY vaccinated & PLEASE read up on vaccinations so she's not over vaccinated & 1 more thing , use a harness & NOT a collar for walking as yorkies have very sensitive tracheas & walking with a collar can cause collapsing trachea & this is Life Threatening. Welcome to YT !:) |
The PREMIE ADOPTING A PUPPY UNDER 12 Weeks old Congratulations on your new Puppy. A Yorkie puppy should stay with his mother until he is about 12 weeks old. If Your puppy is younger, you have a premature puppy in a way. You will have to be his mommy and teach him like she would. 1. Umbilical Tethering Is a wonderful way to bond with your puppy and keep him safe. Hook a leash to his harness and put the other end on your wrist. He will feel secure, he can see you, smell you, and hear your heart beat and breathing. When he is not hooked to you he should be safe in his crate or play pen. You should resist the urge to carry your puppy around. This is a human instinct for human babies. Doggie babies need to walk and learn to follow the leader. Walking is much better for them, it makes their muscles strong and teaches them to look to you for directions. They learn by watching and doing what the leader does. 2. Potty Prep The mother dog begins to push the puppies out of the nest area to potty at 4 weeks, at 6 weeks they follow her to the potty place and copy her behavior. So you have to pick a place and take your baby about every 2 hours during the day. They really do not know they can hold urine, when they feel the urge to pee they pee. When they are 8 to 10 weeks old, they begin to understand they can wait a few minutes, you can begin true potty training. Always praise if they potty in the right place. Potty breaks should be short. Say your cue word ' POTTY NOW' give him 3 to 5 minutes to potty. If he goes, praise 'Good Potty' pet and maybe reward with off the leash play time in a fenced yard. You are teaching him potty first, then sniff and play is ok. LOL I don't mean to write my book here. But puppy training is my passion. Everything they learn the first 24 weeks of life forms their basic outlook on life. So it is so important to set up a good foundation of training and social behavior. |

I hope this person comes back and sees house seriously bad it is for that puppy to be left alone that long during the day......... |
My puppy is only 9 weeks old & she was from a breeder too. Wondering now about contacting her since I know this has been her practice for years. Wish I had known not to take her before 12 weeks. |

You really cannot expect much housetraining from a 7 week only tiny puppy. And those hours are absolutely too long to crate a 7 week old puppy; she cannot hold her urine for that length of time (can you?) and her bladder is very tiny. Please make some arrangements for someone to check on your precious puppy and/or take her outside or to the pad. Can you come home on your lunch hour? If not, perhaps with school almost out - you can find a responsible teen-ager to come over more than once a day? I really hope you can find something; this is no way for a 7 week old puppy to spend their days. |
