Stitch left in yorkies neck My dog soma had to get stitches a few weeks ago and they removed them last Saturday. I noticed that part of one of the stitches was still there and sticking out. What should I do? Take him back to the vet? Is it safe to try to pull it out myself with tweezers? Or do you think it my push it's way out on its own? It doesn't seem to be bothering him but I still don't like that it's there. |

Since some stitches are coiled through the wound/incision, I would not try to remove it myself. Also, the vet needs to see if there is a pocket of pus underneath the skin or any evidence of infection from the retained stich. |

You can try... watch for any signs of infection though. |

The same thing happened to oscar when he was nuetered. I took him to the vet and she said it was not red or infected so it would be fine to leave it and it would come out on its own. It did... |

We've had some stitches left behind a couple times. We took them out ourselves with no problem. To be on the safe side though, you should probably either go back to the vet or call the vet for advice. |

Hmm, I would take him to the vet. I had surgery once and one of my 'dissolvable' stitches didn't dissolve so the doctor had to pull it out. It was quite painful... |

I had this happen to me after some surgery. The doctor told me on the phone to gently pull on it, and if it slipped out easily to go ahead and pull it out. If it was resistant in any way at all, I was to come in for it to be removed. Just be sure to watch the area for redness or swelling, which could mean infection setting in. |
