How to stop peeing on the bed? My terrible 5 month old Gizmo has gotten in the habit of peeing in the bed. He only does this at night..... He knows how to get down and we have a potty pad for him on the floor in the room, he KNOWS where it is at, but for some reason he still continues to pee on the bed. I am not taking him outside right now because it is wet and cold, he is pee pad trained as well. Any ideas on how to stop this???? I have tried not picking him up to sleep on the bed, but he barks and whines so we of course let him up...... any ideas?? Right now he is in a very hyper stage!!! Biting us and everything like crazy!! |

When my pups were little they wore a kitten collar on them with a little bell at night. The bell let me know when the pups started to wake and right away I would get up and take them to the pad. When they got bigger they did not need to wear the bell collar anymore as they usually wake up when I do and can hold it longer, hope this helps. :) |
This is one reason we built Kahlua his "playhouse" (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23674) . It also functions as a staircase so he can get on and off the bed as he pleases in the middle of the night and go pee on his pad. Before we built it, he would just bark to try and wake us up, if he couldn't he would just pee on the bed. He hasn't had a problem since. |
I would think your puppy should be sleeping through the night. Perhaps you need to limit water after such and such time, maybe 8 p.m., and be certain the puppy pees before going to bed. |
I agree with Karen, do not let him have any water after a certain time. Also, until he can control himself he should not be up in the bed with you. You should get a little crate and let him sleep in there with some blankets. They will not go potty in their bed if they have just a small space. If you start using this method, you may have to get up once during the night to let him pee. When I got Chewy home at 3 months, I used to wake up at 3:30 AM EVERY night to let him pee. That was for about a month and since then he can hold it and he hasn't had any accidents. I know it sucks to hear them cry, but you have to let it go and re-train him otherwise this will just continue. Best of luck and let us know how it goes. |
Dollar does the same thing.....I really dont know what to tell you other then to kennel him at night...i know it is hard trust me...I tried it for about a week and then stopped (shame on me)...but really that is the only way to do it...sorry! |

Cindy, the problem of peeing in the bed is easy to fix: don't let him on the bed. Now, the problem of you rewarding the barking and whining by letting him up on the bed is a more difficult problem. I often think of a title of a book that I saw: Parenting Is Not For Wimps. It's true. It's true about parenting kids and it's true about parenting puppies. I often have to remind myself of it! |
