New yorkie owner...Coat question :) 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and this is my first yorkie. My question is concerning the thinness of Maya's coat. The texture doesn't concern me as much as how thin her coat seems to me. Hair is very thin behind her ears (more at the bottom of the ears), almost bald looking, but it feels like there are some fuzzies back there (very light in color)....She is only 3 months, and weighs around 3 pounds according to her last visit a week ago. The vet said she was as healthy as can be, so that's a good thing :) I've enclosed a few pics, so you can see what she looks like :) |

A silk coat is thin and thats the prefered coat. I know it may seem that other yorkies have a thicker coat but they usually have a cotton coat and that is much harder to groom and take care. I wish mine had the silk coats they both have cotton and I have to keep them cut short or they are unmanagable. So a thin silk coat is a blessing |
Yes, I agree about the cotton coat. I have a maltese/pappy mix, and her cotton coat is alot of work to manage. That's good to know about Maya's thin coat. I am hoping she ends up with a silky coat. I'm so use to my other dog's fur, Maya seemed naked next to her...lol |
Yes a silky coat is more sparse. My Prissy has a silky coat and it is thin still at 7 months.. Hi there and welcome to yorkie talk. |
1 Attachment(s) My Laddy had a coat like that when he was a puppy. It took a good 2 years but he finally has a beautiful silky coat :). Don't give up. |
Thank you for the info. Makes me feel a lot better now. Your pups are all gorgeous! |
Welcome to YT and Maya is a little cutie. My Khloe is 5 months and has a thin coat also. So far our members here are correct. I don't have problems with tangles. I hope Khloe has a silky coat. Khloe comes from a line of beautiful yorkies. |
Laddy's coat is gorgeous. Now that's a silky coat. So it took 2 years for that lovely coat to come in? Wow I had no idea. I guess I still have a great deal to learn! |
aila26 I know what you mean. I have a bichon frise and her coat is so much harder to dry and manage. It is really a different experience.:) |
Your baby is sucha cutie. |
My Paisley has a cottony thick coat. Much agreed that a silky coat is easier to groom. Argan oil seems to help mine. |

she is so cute n thats the kinda coat u want dont worry |
Thank you for the responses! I was concerned she had some kind of issue, but all of you are making me feel much more at ease. Again, I would definitely prefer a silky coat over a cotton coat any day. My maltese/pappy mix needs to go to the groomer every 4 weeks as well as daily brushings. She's a ton of work. And then of course i have 2 dachshunds who are easy peasy..lol! I feel for you guys who have to deal with the cotton coats. It can be a headache to deal with at times! |
