Tick Control.... help Hello Everyone, I have a major issue. I have two yorkie girls - about 3 years old. They love going outside and getting into every corner, bush, flower plants in our half an acre back yard...We live in the suburbs of Chicago and this is our first spring in this house with this huge yard... The problem??? Ticks!!! Almost every week when we go over to the house (it's in renovation stage) and when they run around the yard, they have one tick in them... Since March, Maya had two ticks and Lily had 3. I must specify they are on prevention medicine... First we used the Trioshield that is sold in Banfield for few months, than we used K9Advantix which really sucks... I went to the vet and they recommend Frontline... We also apply the tick killing stuff on the yard but nothing seems to be working. I cannot vaccinate them for Lyme Disease because they have reactions to those strong vaccination where they seem wabbly, drunk, and sleepy for days after that... Do you guys have any idea what to do??? :( I'm scared that they will get sick, and we will get sick too...Ticks are discusting .... blehh. |
Hi! I know all about ticks - they are terrible here in Maryland. K9 Advantix is the only thing that works for us here. It did not work for you? When he was on Frontline, I was finding ticks on him all the time. He ended up coming up positive for lymes disease - but the problem with the test is that it's only 60% correct. So they could have lymes, and not come up for it, OR they could NOT have lymes and come up positive for it. But anyways he was treated with antibiotics for 30 days and now he comes up negative but I get him tested every year along w/ his heartworm test. There's a couple of natural things out there that I know some have had great luck w/ but I can't remember the names of the products off hand. I can't believe k9 advantix isn't working for you? Are you using the full dosage? Edit: here it is: http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/di...rth_fleas.html |
I will chime in about K-9 advantage... They lady down the street who i a vet tech keeps telling me to get it for Corky. |
well i have used both frontline and k9 advantix 2 and i have to say the advantix works best . do you use the full dosage? if not it will not work as well. i also use revolution which is good too |
I am currently using Vectra 3D. I used Advantix in the past and had really good luck with it. The only reason I am using the Vectra is because of vet recommendation. |
K9 Advantix II is what i used on Kiva and it really worked good. we're in the heart of deer tick country here. i plan on using it on Hailey as soon as she gets a little bigger. |
I don't let Gracie run in the yard. She is kept on leash and away from tall grasses and bushes. My cats are another matter. I tried Frontline Plus for cats and the ticks seemed to thrive on it. They would come in with fully engorged ticks on them. I had to buy a tick remover and start combing them with a flea comb when ever they came inside. I hate the horrid creatures but have found nothing that can beat them. |
ticks Where we live here in Idaho the deer are everywhere with Mule Deer and whitetail in our yards every night, I have counted up to 30+ at times on our 5 acres and the deer ticks are terrible here too! Frontline doesn't work that well....I have even tried mixing Permectrin II with water as advised for dogs and sprayed that directly on my Wirehair Pointer and Doberman female and the others as well. It works best, but they still get them, have to watch this time of year especially when wet is when they are worse than ever. The Permectrin II is supposed to last 2 weeks between spraying, but only works about one day or two.....we have 5 dogs total with aussie being shaved totally and my Pom/Pek is shaved totally except head. Wirehair has natural short hair almost looks like a German Shorthair and Doberman almost has no hair so easy to spot this way. Our little baby Yorkie even had one on her and she only goes supervised in front lawn. 11 weeks old and too young to put anything on her yet. I hate using this stuff (any of it) as it cannot be good for the dogs! We clip short starting a month ago when they first started coming out and visually inspect all the time. I hate the little buggers, they are really bad this year and our cats are banished to outside 24x7 now until it warms up and ticks seem to pretty much go away with heat for some reason, as we never see them except once in a great while after heat comes! I would think they would be bad then too! ??????? |
Maggie is pushng 10 pounds these days. Not sure if she has hit it or not (last weigh was 9.5) she is 2 years old. The k9 Advantix 2 dose she is on is for up to 10 pounds....I was wondering whether I should order the next dose up? I still don't get how it works. I know you can't wash them before or after for 2 days, first so the skin is oily enough that it can spread and after...well that just makes sense...So does it just work itself all over their skin or hair? Or does it get into their blood or what? I don't want overdose her, yet I'm worried the small dose won't be enough...I hate having to choose between 2 different sizes of anything! |
Ok... I'm sure this is unpopular but I put NOTHING on my dogs. I raw feed and in 5 years my dogs have had all together a total of 3 ticks and one was just on Zoe but not attached. A lot of raw feeders believe it is related to the raw diet. I can't say if that's true or not but I wanted to share my experience. Actually, I should add that last fall Zoe had a couple of fleas on her, I washed all my dogs in dawn and then applied one tube of frontline to all 3 dogs. (I hate fleas and ticks too!) |

I don't think there is anything that actually repels the ticks. They still get their heads into the skin of the animals and fill up on blood. The best defense I have found for my pets is the flea comb. While they are still on the patio I run the flea comb through their fur after they have been outside to get the loose ticks off. If I find any attached to the skin I pull them off with the tick puller. I'm not going to put additional chemicals that do not even work on my pets when I can get better results getting rid of the foul creatures myself. Hard ticks have a 4 stage life cycle. They start out in the spring as a small spider like bug. After feeding on an animal they go into their next stage. They require a blood meal in order to complete each stage of their life cycle. That is why certain time of the season you may see more ticks than at other times. It has little to do with the weather and more to do with the life cycle and how well they are able to find their next meal to go on with the life cycle. CDC - Tick Life Cycle and Hosts - Ticks |
