puppy questions!! Hey yall!! My bentley will be 9 weeks tomorrow. I took him to the vet last thursday for just a checkup and he weighed 2.06 pounds. Just got home from his vet appointment for 2nd round of shots and he weighs 2.13 pounds. So hes gained .07 pounds in 8 days. Does that sound about normal? Also proud to say i have shaved his ears down so hopefully they will stand, have done sanitary grooming and, have clipped his nails twice- ALL WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS.... I think i got a good one!!! Also does anyone know at what age their ears stand up, or should they already be standing? If they dont stand on their own, what age should i start taping them? |
I would give it untill 12 weeks on the ears. My Jewels ears were down as a pup and thats when they came up one at a time. |
I start shaving ears at 3 weeks. This last litter had ears up by 5 or 6 weeks but it all depends. I would be getting nervous if they aren't starting to come up by 10 or 12 weeks. Shave off the whole ear instead of just the top 1/3 and maybe that will help? |
ziggy's ears were also floppy, but luckly i didnt have to tape them, shaving did the trick. it took about 24-48hrs and they were nice and perky |
We taped my sis-in-laws puppy at 9 weeks (yes I know she got him too young, and yes I told her so lol) after 3 days her little ears are now standing on their own. I helped her and all we did was shave her ears, cut two pieces of medical tape for each ear. put one on the inside of the ear and one out and it worked great. With Laddy we did his the old fashioned way and he hated it lol. Good luck with your new baby :). |
Sounds like your little guy is going to be a big healthy boy. I don't know much about ears since I have only had one set of Yorkie ears to deal with. I think keeping the hair cut short on the ears from an early age helps them to stand more easily. Even a little weight from the fur on their ears can deter them from standing. It's great that you are working on grooming him daily from an early age as he will be used to it when his longer coat starts coming in. Some people wait until the puppy is older to start grooming and then they have their hands full because the pup does not want anything to do with it. Combing daily even though they don't appear to need it makes them accustomed to being touched and combed and to have to hold still when a real grooming session is going on! |
