Socializing your dog? I wanted to find out how everyone handle this? Where did you take your dogs? The reason i ask is because i want to make sure i do everything i can to socialize my little Zoey. My older dog Thunder (Pomeranian) Never seemed to care for other dogs, people however he loves to be around them and to be spoiled. I thought i did a pretty good job socializing him, but maybe not enough around other dogs. I am curious as to what everyone else did, and how do you know somewhere is pet friendly, do you ladies call ahead or is this done by trail and error? I wanted to be able to take my babies out more being i am home a lot more. Thanks :D |

He was very tiny but he always walked everywhere, i never carried him. I did not want a nuerotic dog. We went to lots of different places. He also went thru a 6 week course at petsmart. All in all he does really well when we go out. Never barks, likes other dogs. |
Petstores, little dog parks, schools (exterior not in the building), parks are great once vaccines have been gotten. Signing up for training will be great for both of you- Baby and mommy both get to socialize. |
In the u.k we don't have doggy parks unfortunately. Is difficult to find Plaves to take puppy. Pet stores are one option I also walk my girls daily in the hope of meeting passers by and go to flea markets out door sales garden centres and ant where advertised locally with event on where lots of people might be. |
I agree take him to any store you can get in with him, Rural King, Farm stores, i also took mine to our local 4-H they were having obedience class's, i worked a short distance away from those dogs on lead training, but i wanted my dog to become use to the noise and other dogs and people in the room. I also asked other adults and kids to pet him, with me holding him, i just explained to them what i was doing, and most everyone was happy to be able to pet him, just explain to be gentle and not scare your baby |
I started out by getting a few friends with small dogs together in my yard for regular meetups. Each of us looked around for people we trusted to join our group. When we outgrew my yard, we found a local fenced ballpark and met there. A few people saw us and joined our group. The breakthrough was creating a Facebook closed group page. There we plan, post pictures and invite new people when we meet them. We tag each other with pictures, so all our friends find out about our group and some ask to join. Our group has grown to more than 50 people in 2 years. We meet every Saturday and Sunday and usually around 10 people and 20 dogs show up. |
Take him out, carrying him, even before he has finished all his shots - he can then see lots of people/dogs/cars, etc. You could also invite friends over who have dogs who have had all their shots to play with your pup. A lot of new research shows that the most important socialisation happens BEFORE 16 weeks and so the more you can expose the better. |
I took Callie to the pet stores a lot and the dog park. The dog park is probably where she got most of her socialization that and when I would take her down to my moms house to see her two dogs. |
I just socialized them to different places, sounds and things so they wouldnt be fearful. I dont let mine around strange dogs or go to dog parks and I dont have any friends with dogs so they really havent socialized with dogs except encounters at places like petsmart and my uncle has some poodles that they see |

Couver and Khloe are two of the most socialized dogs I know :) They go with us literally everywhere we go except for work. They love to ride in their Kwigy Bo and go to stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, Bath and Body Works, the mall, outlet malls... Everywhere. We also take them to the dog park about 4 times a week and they LOVE it. They love seeing other dogs, and get so excited when we drive to the dog park. They start bouncing around and yelping with excitement when we get within 5 miles of the park. We also take them on walks and they go with us whenever we go on vacation. They spend the night with us in hotels, family members houses and adapt really well to new situations. There are a ton of ways you can socialize your dogs, and a social dog is more than a dog that deals well with other dogs... You need to expose them to people, different places and experiences. 1 Attachment(s) I do not allow them to walk on the floors in stores or on streets or parking lots but we take Brody and Mia everywhere they will let them in...TJ Maxx, Lowe's, Family Dollar, Michael's, Home Depot, PetSmart, PetSupermarket, and there's more but I cannot remember at the moment...oh, and found out that Wal-mart "clerks" cannot ask you to take them out of the store...only a manager can...so maybe there next. They always attract a crowd...everyone wants to see, pet and/or talk to them. lol Oh yeah...and the laundromat... We always take the memory foam pad to put down in the carts so it doesn't hurt their feet. |
