SCREAMING in the car.....
 

We would hate to think this is something we have to live with, but here's the situation.... Our lil boo boo does a non stop squeeling scream when she is in her car seat..... She seem very excited to get in the car when going places, because many of the trips are to the dog park which she loves... We have tried treats, bones & toys but nothing seems to work.... She does not appear to be scared, but the whaling is daunting.... HELP!!!!!! :confused::boy_hug::doghop::girl_hug::monkey:

Oh I feel for you but no ideas on how to stop her from doing this.

Romeo loves to go for rides but the minute he realizes that I have stopped to park he starts whining as if someone's attacking him! Fortunately it does not last very long ...

Have you tried distracting her from her screaming? When my Presley goes into non-stop barking I use a can with pennies in it and shake it really loud to distract him. After a couple shakes he usually stops barking. When he starts up again, I give the can a shake and he stops again. Now, all I have to say is...where's my can...and he stops barking.

I know that I am going to get blasted for this.... but has anyone ever put their yorkie in the trunk??

I would think not, with how hot/cold it could get. No way. I probably would report it, if I saw someone do so.

Scream barking in the car. I hope you were joking about putting your dog in the trunk. That would be cruel and dangerous.
As you know dogs bark for many reasons like, boredom, fear, aggression, and when excited. You can retrain your Yorkie not to bark in the car. But first you must teach the the cue words, Enough, Good Quiet, and your cue word for barking we use Bark.
How to TEACH QUIET

Unwanted barking. Is 99% your fault. Are you thinking, Oh great, blame the parents every time.? Sorry tough love and honesty made me say it.

Training your puppy to be Quiet, is better than correcting your dog after there is a pattern of problem barking.
1. Three Alert Barks are allowed. Say Good BARK. This lets them know they have done their job. You will take care of it from there. Then, Say your cue word for them to stop, always use the same word. We say 'ENOUGH' and when they are quiet, say Good Quiet.


2. Start by teaching your dog these three words Bark, Enough, and Quiet. When you are doing regular things together like, playing ball, when feeding etc. When the dog barks say ’Bark’ this puts a name on the behavior. (or Speak, Talk what ever seems natural to you) Allow three barks. Cue with ’Enough’, I automatically make a slicing motion when I say Enough. I don’t teach this as a hand signal but, people have pointed out I do it every time. So maybe it is a verbal and visual cue for the dog. When your dog gets quiet, Say Good Quiet and reward *.

If they keep barking cue with 'Enough' wait a few seconds, it takes about 5 seconds for them to understand and do what you ask. Then spray with short swift blast of water. The water is just to break that barking trance. Do not drench your dog. Redirect them if they are fixated on something. As soon as they are quiet, praise with ‘Good Quiet’.


3. You can teach your dog bark on cue. .When they Alert Bark we simply say ’Bark, bark, bark. It only take a few days for a puppy to understand that they can start and stop barking. Barking is something they do and it doesn’t just happen. Like potty training, self control is taught concerning barking too. After a few days of hearing Bark, Enough, and Quiet. Your dog is ready to learn to bark on cue. Just before you feed your dog or give a very tasty treat, cue him with ‘Bark’ it may take a few minuets of dancing and spinning but, he will bark. Praise with Good Bark and reward with the food or treat.

I seen a serious on the dog whisper about this. I forgot what he did to over come the fear of the car. But that is what he called it.

Do you have yours in a car seat or something secure so they will feel better/safer. I had a poodle mix that used to do the same thing. Love to go, but always did the screetching in the car. Drove me bats!

I think I got lucky with Ahi or I inadvertently taught her well.
When she barks when we don't want her to we said "NO BARK" and she stops. And give her praise. When she barks at someone coming into our yard and is notifying us we say "OK GOOD GIRL" and "ENOUGH" and she stops.

She will also bark if I ask her "what's that?" or "who's that?" or if I simply ask her "what?? what do you want?" lol in a playing way. :D

When she barks, all my hubby got to do is say "Hey" and she stops. :rolleyes:

ZoE does this loud whining cry whenever she recognizes where we are going. It's nothing like the bark she does when barking at birds, squirrels, people, etc that she sees outside the window at home.

For the dog park, it starts as soon as we go under the freeway over pass and make a turn at the gas station. She recognizes it & whines all the way to the dog park. When going to my parents house, it starts as soon as we turn into their subdivision.

Strange thing is, I can drive all the way across the State to visit my kids at college and she doesn't make a peep the entire journey, until she sees the campus buildings. So with ZoE, with high pitched whining cry is definately excitement.

Oh my word!! Seriously !! I certainly hope not.

When I first got Mrs. Beasley's car seat, I put it in the house. Put toys in it and gave her treats in it. Then I moved it to the car and put her in it and gave her a treat and took the seat back inside. Then when she went for a short ride, she was ready and wanting the treat and constant "good girl". Now she would rather ride in the seat instead of my lap.

Is it a squealing of anxiety when in the car-seat? If so, your pup may have anxiety being in that seat by herself and feels like she can't 'protect' you in the car. I'd suggest the Thundershirt if this is the case.

I use to have Addy in a car seat, but now I use a harness which attaches to the seatbelts; she seems to like that better.
