Help....A Monster Fly!!!!! It's been a while since we've been on YT. I went thru a divorce and moved. My girls traveled back and forth several times before settling in to their new home. They had no problems and loved to travel. They were great. Tia has created a strange behavior recently. She was always afraid of lightning, fireworks and loud noises....to the point she needed a straight-jacket (poor thing). She is also afraid of brooms, flyswatters, and new little things. I've had her since she was 10 weeks and she turned 2 years on Jan 23rd. (Nobody has abused her.) Recently she is becoming terrified of the littlest things. My friend was playing with her last week (late at night) and I said, "There's a fly!". Someone had let a fly in the house. Tia started shivering uncontrollably and I thought my friend had played a little too rough with her. No, she waited and watched that fly go by and ran, shivering and panting. It took us a while to figure out it was the fly. She was better by the next evening, but the same behavior comes and goes. THERE IS NO FLY! Right now she is following me around, shivering in fear. I can't figure out what it is either. She was sitting next to me on the couch and just started shivering. Nothing has changed and both girls seem to be healthy. Any suggestions? I hate for her to be terrified all the time! |
Have you checked her anal glands ? as when they are full they will often shake from the pain . |
No. She seems to be more afraid than anything. She tries to go upstairs and hide and she is just so happy when I let them outside to play. I am making appts with new vets this week to find one 'We' like. |
Do you take her on walks to get her used to new things, noises and smells. She sounds unsocialized |
Both girls love taking walks and got used to their new surroundings immediately. I've traveled (6-12 hour car drive) quit a bit with both of them and they are just so happy to be friends with everybody and see new things. I've stayed at relatives/friends houses, hotels, taken them shopping and on walks. They are even around bigger dogs and just go with the flow. She was never frightened like this with any thing/place. Both girls don't like baths, but she doesn't even act like this when I give her one...Ally does though! Ally is a DIVA! lol |
It is odd because when they usually have fears of strange things its usually socialization issues they just arent experiencing enough. I found that with my own dog Jewels. I have no idea why she was so scared of the fly |
It's not just the fly. Something is scaring her downstairs and I can't figure it out. It's driving me crazy because I don't want her to be frightened. We've been settled in our new home since Feb and have been here several times before. Neither girl has had an issue. Ally (3 lbs 2 oz/3 yrs) is timid and Tia (6.5 lbs/2 yrs) is super outgoing and dominant. We were just outside and she was so happy. I just received two new cabinet doors and they were leaning against the wall. I've even put them out of sight, thinking it was them! Is she OCD? It is not the TV because she doesn't react to the different shows. She is sitting beside me right now and doesn't seem to be scared, but she is scanning the room. Well, now she's looking at me and shivering again. What the heck is she going thru!!!! |
I wonder if it is a pain issue. My Moka is a little bit like this. She has very sensitive hearing. If I drop something, she runs and hides, and some of the funniest little things makes her jump. But she gets over it very quickly without holding a grudge (Like if I drop something in the Kitchen she will quickly run and hide, but it doesn't make her afraid to retrun to the kitchen when the coast is clear). She is due for a check up and I am going to ask my vet to check her teeth/ears. I have a feeling something is going on in the teeth/ears. Might be something to think about. I just know that some noises are magnified when they have an inner ear issue. |
Oh, another thought. Check the smoke alarms. If they are getting ready to go out they transmit a noise. My dogs always hear this before it gets loud enough that I hear it. Sends mine into a frenzy of shaking! Just to be sure, go ahead and put new batteries in them and see if it helps her behavior. |
I feel so badly for your poor baby. Sometimes my Romeo will hear a sound or pickup on a scent before I do and it sets him crazy. Do you live in a house or an apartment complex? I am thinking if it's an apartment complex maybe she is hearing the sound of a vacuum, or hair dryer, or something of that nature. If I use the vacuum in front of Romeo he is ok but the minute that vacuum goes on another floor of the house (and out of his sight) he shakes uncontrollably and start panting. Hope you can determine the source and get the issue resolved soon. |
We live in a house and she is frightened of the vacuum also. It's odd how Tia is the dominant one, but scared of everything and Ally is so timid, but first to approach something new....other than a person. Tia does have sensitive hearing. I never thought about the smoke detector, but will check them. Maybe something is making a noise down here that I can't hear. They have an appt tomorrow morning and I'll ask the vet to check her over good$$$$$$ Thanks everybody. |
Well, no answer from the vet. She did question me about Tia's LP. She asked if she was limping or anything like that. It doesn't seem to bother her at all yet and she's a normal active yorkie! I dread the future for her though. I hate to put her thru that surgery. On her fear issue, I did turn off the outside bug light and will see if that helps. I just can't think of anything else! |
I hope your baby gets over her fear soon. Poor baby and all you really can do is trial and error of different things in her environment. |
