To the "leathers" ? 1 Attachment(s) someone mentioned this about Willi's ears...that his fur is "down to the leathers". Can't remember where this was (I'm on a few dog groups). In the pic I have attached, he has no fur on his ears and you can see that the tip of his left ear is actually missing. Attachment 368307 He was severely malnourished when he was rescued and as a result suffered hair loss...hence the "naked" ears...but I am wondering if they will grow in? I was just looking at the sweet pics of Romeo and how cute his furry ears are...and wondered if Willi's might be like that one day? I don't really care in the least...I'm just happy to be giving him a good home....just curious I guess. |
It depends if he has a condition known as leather ear it wont. If it was because of poor nutrition the hair will grow in time |
Poor guy. He is a very lucky boy to be taken in by you... I have no advice on the leather ear, I just wanted to say thank you for rescuing him. He's a cutie :) |
Willi is a cutie! So glad you found each other. When my Sammy had leather ear, I used Lotrimin (over the counter) on it and it was gone in about a week and never came back. Good Luck! |

You can ask for the med and try it from your vet it cant hurt. In the meantime I would make sure he is eating a high quality food |
Lola came to me with leather ear.... i have been cleaning her ears with alcohol on a cotton ball then applying the lotrimin in a very thin layer after. i have been doing this everyother day and what an improvement. if it is leather ear when u clean it with the alcohol cotton ball you will see black yuckies come off and when the hair falls off it is stuck to a black clump like. this is a fungus so they say. |

I think leather ear is a fungal infection, if memory serves. The other suggestions to treat it, if that is the case, may be options for you, but you might try giving him coconut oil, too...there is a recent thread with a lot of info...and some previous threads as well if you search YT. Coconut oil will help him in many ways, whether or not he has leather ear. Besides feeding it to him, you can also rub a teensy bit of coconut oil on the ears...it won't hurt if it gets into the ears, either...it is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, etc. and may help if the issue is leather ear from the outside in as well as from the inside out. :p Also, vinegar and tea tree oil kill molds...a vinegar wash shouldn't hurt...or a diluted tea tree oil lightly applied. The missing ear tip may be due to a previous injury...another animal, grooming accident...etc., and I wouldn't expect the ear tip to grow back, but the hair may when he is in better health. Good luck...he's such a cutie! I am certain he's delighted to be in your loving arms! :D |

However I will absolutely try the coconut oil. I have been following that thread with interest! And he's not in my arms yet! Tonight! Tonight he's coming! I almost can't contain myself here at work!! AND it's a slow work-day! UHG! |
I've had success in treating leather ear with a vinegar/water solution wiped on ears daily, then rubbing on coconut oil. Leather ear is more common in colder climates and does seem to get better with sunshine. I'm wondering if light therapy would be helpful, might ask your vet. |

Awww! I don't have any advice concerning leather ear but I have to say... he's a cute as a button anyway!;) |
Oooh very interesting. Ellington (who I got yesterday) visited the vet yesterday and she mentioned his ears. His ears are like your yorkie's, although slightly more hairy I think. The vet said they were a sign that he had had some severe allergic reactions in the past, but it was common. She didn't mention trying to remove them, or heal them......but now you've called them leather ears, that's exactly what they are! |

This is going to sound weird...and I doubt it would work now that the ear is healed...but body parts have been re-grown according to research and personal accounts. The thing is it takes a long time and certain precautions must be undertaken, etc. I think it was part of a finger or hand or something, but I have seen an accounting of an individual whose arm/hand/finger was "sewn" inside his abdomen for quite some time to allow the regrowth. Wish I could remember specifics...or maybe I forgot them on purpose...:p:D Quote:
Oh...I somehow missed that little detail...lol You poor thing! I would be going mad! I remember the Saturday we picked up Brody...I was riveted to the counting of minutes til the appointed time the call was supposed to come...and almost in a state of panic when it wasn't on time...lol When I knew I was going to see if Mia was a good fit for Brody, it was pretty much the same...wanting to fast-forward time. lol So, I can definitely relate! :D I guess there'll be more pix of him on YT in a few hours, then...? :p I can hardly wait...! |
