bully sticks Are bully sticks ok and how often and how much to give. I would really like if yall could give me some ideas on good safe toys and treats My yorkies are 6to 3lbs. Thanks Trisha |
Hi Trisha! Bully sticks are absolutely wonderful! I actually buy Jack the biggest ones I can find - yes most times they are longer than he is - the store I get them from has them braided. Jack loves them! Since they are so big, I just let him eat it whenever he feels like it. Its kind of funny because he tends to eat it after he eats his regular food, almost like he is using the bully stick to "floss" between his teeth. Warning, some of them are really stinky but the dogs love them. We have quite a few toys for Jack including squeaky toys and a couple of the braided ropes (just be careful and keep an eye on your dog to make sure they don't chew the ropes - I have read where some dogs will chew them and then get an obstruction in the bowels because they swallow the rope material). Jack just likes to play fetch with them and does not chew them thankfully. Also any of the Kong toys are good. |
My dogs love bully sticks! Well Max loves to eat them and Cooper loves to carry them around :rolleyes: I don't ever give them for more than a 15 minute period at one time. I buy the odor free ones from Bully Sticks - All Natural Value Dog Treats - Best Bully Stick and am very happy with the quality and service. My boys' favorite toy has always been the Skinneez stuffing free toys. I think you can find them in the As Seen on TV section near the checkout in Walmart. |
Callie loves bully sticks! But I would always make sure you are around when they are chewing them because there is always a risk when it gets small of choking. |

thanks so much for all info. It really helps i will get my babys some bullysticks, look for a skinneez toy look at kong toys and trow my rope away they chew on it and play tugwar. Sorry but i have one more question. How about nylobones the toys are they ok. Trisha |
Trisha please be careful when buying Bully Sticks. Don't buy any that are from China. My favorite boutiqe started bringing in cheaper bully sticks made in China and I made a comment to the owner that some people don't want anything to do with anything made in China. She was unaware of all the problems associated with China amd said she wasn't going to sell them. The Best Bully Sticks site from above are made in the USA and you can get odor free which is a plus. |
I only give a bully stick every couple of weeks... They are a treat, not a staple to their diet. Just make sure to watch them while they are chewing on them... They can become choking hazards if they get too small. |

i have 4 yorkies at my house gettinng two more. Mom has one sister has one. I have learned alot here and reserch. Have talked with alot of breeders. I have some what of a mentor now. Mom and sister learning to. Just so hard to find good treat and food. Sorry for all the quetions. I have more. What r good treat for tricks and biskets for snack. I feed them dr fosterandsmith dog food use to feed blue bufflow. I really want to make sure im giving my babies all they need and none of what they dont. thanks again Trisha |
I bought the small Kong for my two dogs and these are perfect for putting one end of of the bully stick inside. The Kong provides a better grip when the dogs are chewing and prevents them from trying to swallow the bully stick when it gets down to a really small size - the small size is still in the Kong. When I see they are gnawing on the Kong itself with no bully stick showing, time to dig out the stick and toss. |
The less moisture a bully stick has the better. I use Merrick bully sticks and they are very hard so that they aren't really a "treat" or food item, but a chewing stick. If your dog can chew a stick in a day, it's too soft and more of a food item than a stick. It takes Joey more than a week to chew a 6 inch stick and I throw them out when they are around 2 inches so that there isn't the danger of choking. The are really good for your dogs teeth and gums. |

Razzle gets a bully stick about once a month; in fact he is happily chewing on one now. The big dogs I feed knuckle or heavy thigh bones to, once a week. Once I finish showing Razzle he will move to the small knuckle bones. Real bones are a whole lot messier than bully sticks lol |
