Ewww... HELP! Flea Dirt! Im in California and the fleas are really BAD. I live in a community/condo area. So I really cant treat the yard since its pretty big and everyone around me shares the yards. Plus I go on walks, so IM sure she picks up her fleas that way also. :eek: She is on a monthly treatment of advantix and Im having to flea bath her in between the treatments. I know you wait a few days before and after treatment to bath. I vacuum, wash blankets, use flea powder in the rugs and let set before vacuum. So Im taking all the steps I can. My yorkie still picks up fleas and now is getting covered even worse in "flea dirt". I cant even pet her with finding nest of them all over. Im lost on what to do. :confused: Is there a stronger monthly flea treatment that I can do? Please help... :cry: I also read on here to wash in DAWN dish soap to help remove the flea dirt. I will try this asap! |

I went out and bought a flea comb and used it on her with flea shampoo tonight. OMG so many came off! Im thinking about potty pad training her. She is house broken to go outside and thats where the fleas are. Vet said there isnt much they can do since the fleas are so bad in the area where we live. He offered to treat with a pill once a month and also give her a short yorkie cut :( Vet said the pill works the same as the drops Im doing. But the fleas have to "bite" her to have any effect on the medication in her system. |
When we go out of town in the trailer I do a full body search each time my baby goes outside. If they are not in your home and you are doing everything else right. I would discuss using something different with your vet and get a flea comb,us it each time your dog comes in. |
There some stuff called flea busters that is awsome, it gets put in your carpet and it works for a year unless it gets wet or shampooed. I dont ever have a flea issue since I have done it twice. THere is some stuff call mad, mad about organics, that you just spray on your dog and the fleas dont like the stuff. I used to use a flea comb daily and you can put some vaseline on it and the fleas stick to it. Good Luck |
How unfortunate. I had a similar issue a few years ago. I started renting a place and both dogs and cat got fleas horribly. I swear I did everything in the books.. Even after extermination it persisted. I moved out shortly after. The dish soap thing worked really well for me. Sadly, that was the start of Pheobe's completely shaved era. It was horrid, but effective toward keeping an eye on the flea problem. i would use the soap on a washcloth and gently scrub. As long as i kept up on it it would keep it away. It seems to almost stain.. yuuuuck. So sorry you have to go through this... I wish i had more advice as I know how much of a hassle it can be... gunna be a long next couple months to get total control.. get used to the idea of almost daily soaks in the tub for a while ... |
Talk to your vet first. Fleas here have become immune to all of the topicals, like Frontline, Revolution, Advantage, etc. the only thing that has worked here is Comfortis. I don't like to use it but don't know what we would do without it. I went through the topical treatments, washing, vacuuming, bathing (repeatedly) only to still have fleas. One dose of Comfortis and I never saw another flea the entire summer/fall last year. I didn't have to monthly dose them, just the one time worked for us! |
Been thru the flea thing in the past. My vet at the time recommended a topical along with comfortis. The comfortis suppose to kill fleas within two hours after it's in their system. I know that's alot of chemical at one time. I waited a couple days in between and it was with a bigger dog. Good luck. |
You might consider speaking with management of your condo about spraying the walking area (everyone would have to be notified as to when it will be done). If any of your neighbors are having trouble with fleas they should call as well. It would be in managements best interest to do this for the people that live there as well as the property. |
