i'm having a hard time just finding a yorkie in TN

can someone answer a few questions for me?


how much should i expect to pay? how do they determine the cost?
she doesn't have to be a perfect show dog.
are you going to pay more for her if you are wanting to show her and less for a pet?
i want a registered female yorkie for a pet that has the typical yorkie traits tan hair around her face, sweet little eyes etc.

i never would've thought it would be this hard

any help finding my baby would be appreciated

Sorry that I am of no help to you....I am from PA. Prices vary in different locations. Usually a person will charge around $150-$200 for shipping one to you. I have absolutely no experience in shipping animals and will be of no help to you there either. Makes you wonder why I posted :p . I just want to say take your time, look around and educate yourself on the breed and what to look for and warning signs that say "AVOID AT ALL COSTS". Yorkie Talk threads will help you with this. that's what I was expecting to pay but i have seen some that are 1200-2500 is that a show dog?
so it's got me wondering the difference in the dogs. i mean i want a purebred yorkie but she doesn't have to come from champions.
and i definitely won't pay $1200-2500 for a pet.

Around here about $1,000 is the norm. I'll tell you what, let me see what I can find for you...

Where in Tenn are you. I know a breeder in Murfeesbourgh that shows and I believe she also has some pet pups now and then, and if she does not have one, she may know of someone else in TN that does.

Don't worry. It will happen. Try posting an ad in your local paper or online. I went to Louisiana Classifieds and placed an ad. I thought I was never going to be able to find a yorkie around my area. My mom and I are the type that only drive within our own area. Don't feel comfortable driving in big cities or places we don't know. So, we were very limited. I found a breeder within a 5 mile range of my own home! Our possible puppy is due to be born tomorrow. We found this lady by word of mouth and not the internet. She has 4 litters of puppies due. She breeds yorkies and Maltese. One litter is due tomorrow and one on Friday. And 2 more litters are due in January. Her prices start at $800 and go on up depending on size, etc... I know Louisiana is quite a drive from Tennessee though. We live an hour southwest of New Orleans. I wish I could help out. I am glad I found yorkie talk. I have been hooked ever since I found this site. Really nice and helpful folks here.

1200.00?i think that's what is making me crazy.does that make any sense at all? i want my baby to be healthy and to look like a yorkie.

No, it all depends on the person and what they charge. Every person is different. We paid $400 for my yorkie in 1992. I have been searching for my new yorkie around August, and I was a little bit surprized how much the prices went up. Most are charging $1500. If you are only looking for a pet and not a show dog, then you can find one for around $800-900. It does not make them any less of a yorkie. The lady that we are possibly going with her prices do start at $800, but go up. So, we still don't know what our final price will be until the puppy is ready to go home. Our puppy is due to be born tomorrow but won't be ready to go home until around Valentines Day. We are just going to give her the deposit as soon as the puppies are born. So, she does not sell our puppy to someone else. You could go the vets around your town or even Petco and Petsmart and see what breeders are near your area. What is the furthest you are willing to drive? Some will ship, with a shipping cost of at least $250. But, personally, we did not want our puppy to be shipped to us. We wanted to see the puppy first before making our final decision.

Well, our Yorkie (Tucker) costjust 850 so ours wasn't that expensive, but they can range up to at least 2000 so yeah, You cn expect to pay alot of money. But I don't know how they determine the price. And it does not matter if you show them or not. You still pay the same price. Unfortunatly thats all that I know. sry.

The cost is usually based on the pups size and pedigree. If you purchase from a breeder who is mostly selling pups that come from show dogs you will pay more. If they have champs in their line you will pay more. There are some pups out there that run pretty cheap, under $600. If you see those ask lots of questions and make sure the owner has done what is needed for that pup. Basically put a reasinable price to pay for a pet Yorkie that your just wanting love and play with you will pay $600-$1000. The smaller they are the more you pay, the better pedigree the more you pay. You can purchase a pet quality pup that has a good pedigree and that is why they are priced higher. It is not cheap to raise a healthy litter, so beware when you see them selling for cheap. There are some good breeders in Kentucky. Good Luck.

A lot depends on where and who you are buying from. In CA the only Yorkies I have seen under $1000. are pet quality Yorkies from someone breeding 2 pets. That's a lot different than getting a Pet quality Yorkie from a Show breeder or an experienced fancier who has monitored their lines for years. Not judging just stating what I witnessed.

I realize price is important, just be sure you know what you are getting. Two puppies can look a lot alike and one can be $700 and another $2000. Many (most?) of us wouldn't know the difference until the Vet bills started coming in :confused:

someone else will have to explain ckc registration. AKC is more acceptable here. I would want to ask this person several questions before seeing this pup. It's too hard to walk away from a warm puppy. Parents on site is always a selling point but you need to know what you are looking at. Mom's fur may be cut short so getting an idea of color might be hard.

Help me folks, what should she ask?

How long have you been breeding? Where did you get the parents? How many litters has mom had? Any c-sections?

How old? What age can I bring her home? Do you have any healthy guarantee or a vet check?

The yorkie club of america has a listing of breeders that might be helpful. I talked to a lady that seemed very knowledgeable and tried to help me find a female in Alabama. She spent quite a bit of time talking to me and even has followed up, and she doesn't have anything available right now. If all else fails, you may want to check them out. I know I searched Alabama, Georgia, Ms and Tenn. There is a lady in Tn with beautiful pups for 1800. I couldn't spend that much.

you have pretty much covered it but I wanted to ad that altho AKC is what I like, CKC is also well known and I have found in my searches in TN and Ky., that most are CKC. it is really hard to find an AKC yorkie around here. Don't know why. Mine is AKC and I paid a bit more just because of that. Again, don't know why but all my dogs are AKC and that's what I wanted.

As a breeder when I look at parents to be of my babies i want them to ask lots of questions, as I do too.
Make sure your pup comes with a health guarantee, shots, worming, and a 48 hour vet check return policy. You need to ask about the parents. Do they have any congenital defects that they are aware of. For example luxating Patella, Liver shunt.
Look at the parents teeth, and the puppies. Make sure they have a good bite. Also pay attention to the temperment of the parents. CKC is not as strict as AKC as far as breeding goes, but there are many responsible CKC breeders out there.
Go and visit the house. Trust your instinct right away. If the place stinks, or if they keep their pups in an outside cage, or if they are not friendly to you than most likely you want to look else where. Never buy a pup because you feel guilty for it, only buy the one that you trully want.
I personally avoid breeders that have multiple types of dogs they breed. I know that that may sound bad, but I worry about them being a mill, rather than a breeder that is doing for the betterment of the breed.
Be patient and keep looking the right pup will come along. Remember that only you can decide of the pup is the right one for you.

What happened to the puppys mom. Was she sick? Cathy and Yoshi

she said she was killed last week when she was returned to the kennel.
so i'm guessing another dog killed her.not sure.

i'm going to see the baby in the morning.
i'll be up all night gathering info to take with me so i'll know what to look for.

yeah i bet it is hard to say no especially if it's living in poor conditions. i'll be strong. i can't afford not to.

One thing I'd do is find out exactly what did happen to the mother. What killed her? That might tell you a lot of what you are dealing with.


No, it doesn't hurt to go and look. :) Just remember that there are probably darned few of us that can go look at those darling little faces and walk away without one and the breeders know that. OK? ;)

You say the puppy is eight weeks old? How much does it weigh?

I'm in Fl and looked for one year before finding Chloe and then found Lacey in an unusual way, I'll skip all the details. I paid $800 for Chloe, who had 4 and 5lb parents but she is light with a good 7 plus pounds on her. She's a beautiful yorkie, very pretty face but has a "roach" back, longer legs and a combination of silky and cottony fur. I was a little disappointed at first that she wasn't the typical, short legged, black/gold, small yorkie. When I got Lacey, although she was $2500, her dad was a champion and the breeder told me exactly what she thought, not a guarantee, about looks and weight, Lacey is exactly what the breeder said and what I had in mind. She isn't show material, her hair is a little thin I think for that but she is small, has a very straight back, nice carriage, short legs, beautiful tail and sassy walk, I feel the extra money was worth it. Here's the but, both yorkies are wonderful and if you aren't wanting to show then it really isn't important, what is is their disposition and health. Hope you find one your love as much as I love mine. They are great pets.

i think that's what i was looking for is the comparison between the two dogs $800 versus $2500. i think as long as she's healthy and has the typical yorkie traits (and she should if she's registerd and her parents are registered right?)
then that's what i'm looking for in a pet.

what about the tail? does something have to be done?i forgot to ask about the tail.

hi there I live in Savannah, Tn. My PepperAnn just had a litter on the 17 of Nov. she had 1 girl and 3 boys. the mother is reg AKC and CKC the daddy is Reg CKC. I just received the CKC puppy Applications for each pup. here are the pictures of them. there tails were docked at 3 days. the mother weighs 6 lbs. the daddy is 4 lbs. if this helps you any.

Make aure you interview the breeder's vet as a reference. Very imortant what the vets says about the breeder in my opinion.
