i should also add, that even at 10lbs he is NOT a big dog at all!!

i can carry him around. he lays on my lap. and guess what i don't have to have a heart attack every time he jumps off the couch! :)

Your puppy is very cute but he is going to be way over the breed standard weight. That can be very disappointing for a buyer who expected their "purebred" puppy to look like the Yorkie they may have seen some where else. I have seen mixed breed Yorkies that start out looking very much like a Yorkie but as they mature you start to see the characteristics of the mix.

Did you see both parents? Did the owner have many other dogs around? Some breeders accumulate a large amount of dogs and it becomes difficult for them to keep track of who is breeding who. Then others are just outright dishonest. An owner of a female purebred can get litter registration slips and say it was bred with another purebred when actually the female was bred with some other dog. Never depend on just registration paper to be a guarantee of the quality of the dog you are buying.

I would sure do a DNA test on the puppy. If it turns out to be purebred then it is possible that one of the parents just threw some genes from farther back in the pedigree. It is best to deal with a breeder who has proven stock. Meaning that the breeding has been done before and has produced consistently quality pups. If your pup is not purebred you have a case. You should not have to return your puppy but should get compensated for being misled.

This is more about the breeder than it is the dog. I think we should love our pets and accept them for whatever they are, just like we do with our children. The only reason I would want to do a DNA test is because I was planning some legal recourse against the breeder. Your vet has provided you with some great information. He thought the documents were false and he said she gave the wrong vaccination to your dog. Can you report her to the registry used in your country after you get more proof? Maybe, your vet has some other ideas as well, and he also can do a DNA test. Here, we can sue a breeder if we paid for a purebred and didn’t get one, and you can probably sue too. Best of luck, and I’m so glad you are the type of owner who loves them no matter what! I do agree with the others who say, just because a dog is larger than standard, it doesn't mean it's not a purebred, sometimes dogs throw much larger dogs than what they are, your vet is incorrect about the dog not being any bigger than its largest parent, that's why a good breeder studies the lines. The father or mother may have been the smallest in the line and they throw much larger pups.

He sure looks like a Yorkie to me.My first one was about 9 lbs. I have no idea how big this lard butt Milo is going to get. He was 4.4 lbs at 3 mos.

I SO agree with GeorgiesMomma! Rylee was sold to us as "she will be 4 pounds full grown" Well..........over a year later she is a little over 6 pounds! However.......I am very grateful she is! She is considered "average" size (I think) and even with her size we have had some "digestion" issues. We are still trying to figure out the best way to feed her. Right now she seems to be doing well so our fingers are crossed!!!! There can be all kinds of issues with tiny tinys so just love your "bigger" baby (he is SO cute and looks pure Yorkie to me) and enjoy all he has to offer!!!! I will say this though..........I totally understand why so many want the tiny ones (I'm not trying to critisize anyone)..............they are SO adorable!!!!

I'm so sorry that you've run into all of these problems with this breeder. How strange that she would give a cat's vaccination to a yorkie puppy. :(

Based on what I can see in the pictures though your little yorkie boy looks like a purebred to me. He's very cute. I do know several friends that have yorkies weighing up to 20 lbs so it does happen. I agree they can come in all shapes and sizes. It's possible that the parents of your puppy were still carrying genes for larger yorkies from previous lines which they carried on to your puppy.

First welcome to YT. And judging by the photo he looks like a Yorkie to me. How-ever your vet said what he did. So.....

Check up on the registration numbers of his parents. They should be listed in your purebred registry in your country. That is actually was Step 1 before you even purchased your boy.

No receipt - no problem GEt a copy of your cancelled cheque from your bank.

Presuma bly you have a contract of sale. Keep that document

Keep and print out all emails from you and the breeder.

Get a DNA analysis done.

Sometimes vets speak out of line, or out of old knowledge. It is eminently possible your boy could grow larger than his Mom and Dad. Why just 3mths ago, I was talking to a good friend of mine who is a breeder, and this litter was a repeat breeding of dam 5 lbs and sire 4 lbs. First litter all well within the two parents weight ranges. Going back 4 generations all within weight ranges of parents.
This litter. She said she had one pup was going to be Godzilla!. I said is he healthy? Oh yes, he has a beautiful structure and I think his coat is going to be amazing. I said great, what is his temperament like? She said you know like Razzles (my pup), I said okay, sell him to a performance/working dog home. spay neuter of course. And be upfront with what you think his weight will track to. It happens sometimes.

It is great that you came on here, to ask the question(s), but do some more research, into your pups ancestory and lineage.

He looks like a pure yorkie to me. And that can't possibly be true that a puppy can't be bigger than his heaviest parent. As a general rule they are not usually bigger than their parents but that is a general rule and plenty of people have had yorkies bigger than both parents.

He looks like a cute, sweetie to me! I'm not good at guessing full breed/mixed breed so I'm not even going to try.

I do know that the breed testing kits are notoriously unreliable when push comes to shove.

:thumbup: Exactly! Mine is 10 pounds and I LOVE it. When I got her, I was looking for a dog that would be 5 to 6 pounds. I am sooo glad she's bigger than that bc once she was that weight I realized how small it is. 10 pounds is still little, but it definitely helps ease your worries about injuries from jumping and getting into small places.

Stormy's mom is 6 pounds and her dad is 4 pounds and she's almost two years old now and is 10 pounds. You can't judge their weight based off their parents. Breeders should never guarantee you a weight on their dog and if your breeder is a good one, I doubt they told you that your dog would be a specific weight and not grow to be bigger than that. In my opinion, your dog looks all Yorkie. Just like human doctors, vets don't know EVERYTHING and their opinion is just that, an opinion.

I had the same thing happen to me, I just sent the 1st message to the sellers asking what they are willing to do to resolve this ! I found out when my dog got sick he was not a full bread yorkie

My Raelle is the breed standard at 6.5lbs....however her half brother (same sire, different Dam) is 10lbs:eek:....I contacted the breeder and told her how big Orion was, what did she tell me.."Oh dear I have no idea how that happened" ...He is purebred yorkie..I saw both mom and dad....I love that bruiser to death..the big clumsy oaf! Obviously a throwback from generations past...the breeder knew nothing about past generations! Rest assured i wont buy from her again. His litter mate is 5lbs..go figure. Just love him as you have been. :) I'm no expert but the cutie looks all yorkie to me!

I had doubts but just ignored the size , the hair is also a clue I have contacted the breeder, if she wasn't sure she should not have sold as such and give papers that means

I will TRY to be short and VERY direct here. YOU HAD BETTER BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN YOU ARE ON IRREFUTABLE LEGAL GROUNDS HERE, OR YOUR BREEDER CAN SUE YOU, (AND SHOULD DO SO!!) FOR DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER, AT THE VERY LEAST! You had better have irrefutable DNA testing done on not only YOUR dog, but the parents of the dog as they are listed on your registration and pedigree papers....You had better proceed with caution as you will possibly find YOURSELF in a "sticky wicket". Your vet is DEAD WRONG with his stupid, irresponsible statement that the dog "should not weigh any more that the heaviest parent"....This is soooooooo wrong and shows how ignorant your vet is in relationship to genetics!!! THAT ALONE makes me wonder if he even knows what kind of vaccine the dog got....was it REALLY cat vaccine or was he using that to get more money out of you????????? YOU HAD BETTER GET ALL THE PROOF YOU CAN COMPILE THAT PROVES THIS DOG IS A MIXED BREED AND IS NOT OFFSPRING OF THE PARENTS AS THEY ARE LISTED ON HER REGISTRATION PAPERS. So are you saying if I bought my dog from a breeder that said it was 100% and the blood work shows it is not I have to know what the parents blood line were .

I STRONGLY advise you not to go off half cocked and ready to"go after this breeder to teach her a lesson"!!!! YOU may be the one taught a lesson!!! If this breeder is doing unreputable things with her business, I am all for hanging her!! BUT, if your vet is instigating what can quickly turn into a legal confrontation between you and that breeder, you had better be sure you are not going to a gunfight, carrying a stick! I have had several people tell me that they think Maggie is a Silky. They know this for a fact because their mom raised Silkies and Maggie looks exactly like the dogs their mom raised. One man became very rude, loud and obnoxious at the dog park. I walk away from people that don't have a clue what they are saying or trying to start an argument about.

The OP is from DENMARK. I have no understanding or knowledge of the legal situation in Denmark. I also don't know if their National Registry carries/encourages DNA testing.

If she has the registration papers, she can check that the numbers and names match up with the National Registry of Denmark.

I suppose it is possible to request a DNA test on her pup, then the dicey part is this needs to be matched to the DNA profile of the two parents. If that DNA profile is not on record with the Registry; I have no idea if the buyer has any recourse to "compell" the breeder to secure and register the parents DNA.

You can look at your Yorkie and say, "for a fact" that it isnt a weenie dog, or a collie, or a great dane, or a st. bernard, ....but dont be telling people their Yorkie is NOT a yorkie because you had an aunt that had a friend that had a cousin that had an uncle that raised Silkies and they can "promise you, for a fact" that these "experts" know what you have is not a Yorkie, because that left ear is not as erect as it should be, or that white spot on its chest is not big enough, or tooo big, or ANY OTHER GENERALIZED, STUPID ASSUMPTION"!!! Agreed... I don't know about you but, often times when I'm asked by a stranger; " Do you think my dog is a purebreed xyz?". I demur, I certainly never state anything with certaintude. Particularly I've been asked this question about breeds I don't own or breed. Go figure.

The only breed I would be somewhat willing to "guess" on is the one that I breed (BRT's). And only then if there were at least 3 major clear indicators of some type of "mix".

Love doesn't know breed.

The lady we adopted Bailey from said he was full blooded Yorkie. But I knew better. even though we paid her a small "rehoming" fee and she assured me she paid quite a bit for Bailey, I still have my doubts. But it doesn't matter. Bailey is the greatest dog we've ever had. Both Natalie and I love this little boy (ok so he's 8 pounds). We don't care what he is, just that he is!
