Milo won't play without me.
 

If I am not at home my Milo won't play with my son or husband. All he wants to do is sleep in another room where he has a bed. They try to go get him and put him on the couch with them but he will just go back and get in his bed. They say he don't feel good but as soon as I get home he is back to normal. I really won't him to like them more. My son plays with him when I am at home and milo likes it. I don't know why he acts that way when I am gone. Does anyone else have this problem?

Callie shuts down when I am not home and just sleeps.

I think that's what Miles does. I came home one time and caught him in his little day bed for a hot second before he was clamoring to get out of his exercise pen. One time he was yawning as he just woke up from a nap like 'oh, your home already' which is good. I leave him all of his toys, food and water, clean pee pee pad, and a Kong full of treats (bribery). He doesn't seem to touch the Kong unless I am home. Well, I figure it's his treat, he can eat it whenever he wants ;).

My first Yorkie KoKo was like that. When I wasn't around he just laid on the tile and pouted. I had to leave him with friends once, it was for a couple days. He completely shut down. He wouldn't eat, had to be hand fed boiled chicken, would'nt drink. He slowly came around but he was bad until I got back.

Milo has already developed his attachment to me. He will go over to other people if they come in but his demeanor is completely different and if I move, bang, he is right at my feet. It's funny how attached they become to you and how quickly it happens.

It could be he's retreating to his bed when you are not around as he feels safer there. Perhaps your son or husband are a little rougher with him than he likes or he hasn't really bonded with them as much yet. How old is your son? Many Yorkies are leary of young children as they fear injury, which is often justified. Same reason some of them don't like men - men can play a bit rough with toy dogs. Many dogs feel a little insecure up on high furniture - while others never seem to care what they are on. I would have the guys video a couple of these play sessions so you can get a feel for what happens - bearing in mind they just could modify their behavior a bit knowing momma is going to be watching. ;) Maybe you can have more play sessions down on the floor with you in attendance with the guys and make sure they understand Yorkies are fragile & sensitive little dogs and perhaps a gentler way of approaching Milo might be in order, keeping the sessions with the guys & you very short and fun. Holly is like this as well, she won't play with my fiancé at all when I'm not home. She's like a robot dog, because as soon as I step outside the door and she sees me leave, she curls up and it's lights out until she hears my car pull back up!

My dh said that my boys sit on the back of the couch pretty much the entire time I'm gone waiting for me to get back. They don't play or do anything. He did say that the second I leave they eat their breakfast, but after that it's too the back of the couch staring out the window all day until I get home.

Georgie goes to his grandparents when we have to go in the office. My MIL says all he does is sleep and relax over there. When he is home he wants to play and cuddle. Yorkies are so attached which makes them more like human babies than any other breed I have been around.

Yorkietalkjilly, my son is 20. He stills lives at home. He goes to school so he's not here durning the day. He try's to take up time with him when he is at home but milo still just don't trust him I guess. He will take him outside and he will play but he will go get in his bed when they get back in. He would love it if he would get in his lap and sleep but he won't. I think the guys are jealous lol. Milo love Emilee our 18 yr. old daughter. He will get in her lap and sleep when I am busy or not here. I guess it because she plays with him more. Milo sleeps with me and dh but he don't have much to do with him other than that. Dh don't really play with him tho he is always busy working. He try's to get him to get on the couch with him when I am gone but he won't stay. My daughter and I are planning a trip without the guys and I wonder what milo will do? I worry about him. He may go in a deep depression. how can I get Milo to like them more?

Treats! I always have a canister out for my SS and DH.... my Sapphire has a fear of men, but has finally initiated contact with both of them. This is year 3 that she's lived with us... she is 5 years old now.

Jilly was that way a good deal. She was only 3 lbs. & so careful of herself - she didn't really trust anyone but me to handle her carefully & she would just hang out on the back couch when visitors came - except my sister. She was totally comfortable with her - guess she sensed some familial similarities of actions, voice. When I got a second Yorkie puppy, Jilly was playful at first until the puppy outsized her, then she spent the rest of the puppy's 9 weeks here on the back of the couch. She just didn't like the rough way Teddy played with her at all & would not even try to accept her no matter what I did.

Since you didn't say & the way you described them putting him on the couch, I pictured a father & young son doing that together. I'd assumed he was a child but since he is a man, it could be that he and your husband are not quite as genteel in playing or interacting with Milo than your little one likes. I think some dogs sense that women - even if we play pretty rough with them - are just not as competitive & are more sensitive & nurturing - something many males seem to lack. My BIL was one of the kindest, gentlest men I knew, by my Scotty or my Jilly wouldn't have much to do with him while they would play with some other men in our lives. My first Yorkie, Scotty, loved my then 16 yr old son to death at the time - would even follow him around in the house - but was reluctant to play with him as Danny would tease him at times by making loud noises jumping up, slapping the ceiling with the flat of his hand, ruffling Scotty's fur the wrong way with his hand, lifting Scotty up a bit higher in the air than he liked - some things like that that Scotty took exception to. Scotty was not best pleased with this & somewhat avoided Danny during Dan's younger years. By the time Scotty died & Danny was older, they became fast friends. Maybe it is something like that going on with Milo. I hope you can find out what it is and it works out for your men & your baby.

I hate to say it but that is very normal, it happens all the time, most dogs, especially yorkies bond to one person. Lola is very friendly and when my DH comes home she goes crazy, he picks her up but she almost immediately looks for me and trys to get back by me. My parents were visiting from out of state when i had my last yorkie and my Dad kept telling me that I was doing something wrong to make Kirby so dependent on me because if I was out all he would do was sit and watch out the door and not look at them and almost cry. I said I don't do anything other than I am around allot. Like Kathy say treats will help, your son will just need to keep trying and do what the dog likes and often give him treats and do it while you are there as much as possible because your dog will be more secure and receptive then.

Gracie is a pouter. When she sees I am getting ready to leave she lays her head on her paws and gives me the puppy face. It's so sad looking. She loves my daughter but when I leave she tells me that Gracie just lays around and pouts. They are like little children. If your dog doesn't want to play with your son then he should just leave him alone. Maybe your little guy just needs a nap because he has been up all the time with you.
