My dogs are losing their hair. I have 2 males that are almost 2 yr and one is 3 yrs, both are losing hair and I don't mean just alittle. Sometimes I find clumps of hair. I've been brushing them everyday and get handfulls of hair. They have very thick hair and I have not noticed any bald spots. I was told by a groomer that is was the time of year but they have never done this before. I have hair all over the furniture, clothes, etc. I also have 2 females that are starting to loose alittle when brushing. Everyone is fixed, my females are 3 and 4 yrs. |
I'm so sorry you're having this hair loss problem with your babies. I have heard that hypothyroidism can cause hair loss but given that all four of yours are having the same symptoms I strongly doubt that this would be the reason. I've never heard of yorkies shedding in warm weather but anything is possible. We have four girls and when the weather gets warm here I've never noticed this. Hopefully someone that lives near Florida will be able to help you out. I guess I'd also speak to my vet to see what they would think of it as well. |
I think I would have a vet take a look at them because that does not sound normal for a yorkie. Do they have any kind of rash or any other thing that seem off? |
I agree, hair loss is not normal for Yorkies. They do not shed. I would take all 4 to the vet for a general exam and routine annual blood tests. Do they all eat the same food? ETA: Welcome to Yorkie Talk. :) Keep us updated. |
I think since both are losing its very possible it some type of mite or something like that. Are they related, even so, the odds of them having the same disease strike them at the same time would be low. Even a poor food wouldn't be responsible for large clumps of hair falling. They would have to be severely malnourished for this to happen. What type of food are you using? I think I'd find a new groomer, she doesn't know what she's talking about, Yorkies don’t have seasonal coats, they have hair not fur, and it doesn't fall out in the summer. If lots of the dogs she's grooming have this problem, I imagine, your dog’s could have caught something from them. I'd take them to the vet and perhaps he will suggest a skin scraping the sooner you take care of this the better. |

Good advice:) Welcome to YT:)!!!! I hope that your babies are doing better very soon. It stinks when something is NOT right with them, they are like our children. Let us know what the vet says. |
Thanks to everyone answering to my problem. My 2 males are dad and son. They have always eaten Pedigree can and Perscription dry food. The groomer comes to my house to groom them so they don't go to a salon. They don't have any bald spots or hot spots on them and they don't have fleas. I'm going to take them to the vet and I will let you know the out come. Again I want to thank everyone responding, I knew I could get some help here.:aimeeyork |
I'd be concerned that it may be mites. A vet could test for that. |
I live in Florida and have 2 Yorkies and def they are NOT shedding! I'd be suspicious of food, tap water if on city water, pesticides sprayed in the area...your yard or by govt for mosquito control, etc...detergents, etc., but def something 'general' in nature including pests that all may have encountered. Your vet may have an idea what the deal is or maybe there are tests, but I would guess that 'ordinary' warm weather shedding is not the reason. I hope everything goes okay and you are able to get this sorted quickly...worrisome big time. |
When I read your thread I imediately thought off mites. When chachi lost hair it ended up was mites. |
Welcome to YT and good luck at the Vet. |
You really need to take you baby to the vet... I know that 1 of my yorkies looses a little hair due to allergies so when she takes her meds she does fine her hair grows back. She does not loose a lot however. It maybe due to allergies or it maybe something else all together. I would make a vet trip for sure. |
:D Also welcome to TY:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
All those things too, but I would have a vet do a skin scrape for parasites. |
My Yorkie is 4 years old and she has started losing hair too. I find it all over the floor in big chunks. I also live in Florida. She is scratching also. |
