Yorkie size question? Hello, I'm just wondering if someone can help me. I'm looking into buying a yorkie puppy, and the puppy is 5 weeks old at the moment so she has 3 more weeks to go. The owner is telling me she is going to be between the 3.5-4.5 lbs park. But the father is a red yorkie at 6 lbs and the mother is a silky yorkie at 4 lbs. when I asked her how much the puppies weight at the moment she didn't give me an exact number she just said "less then 1 pound or a little more" So can anyone help me and tell me how big will the puppy grow cause I'm looking for a yorkie that will grow 5 lbs max. Please and thank you ! |
First off I would not buy a yorkie from a breeder who is letting the puppies got before 12 weeks because it is best for small breed dogs to be with there mom until 12 weeks. Also no one can really tell you how big a pup is gonna be its just a guess. Can you tell me what a red yorkie is? |
The dad is a bit darker in colour kind of reddish so I think she calls him a red yorkie I only got that from the breeder. |

You do realize the red yorkies usually cant grow a long coat |
I would honestly look for another breeder. You really want to make sure that you are taking home a little one that wont develop health issues down the road. There are certain issues that are genetic and a reputable breeder is aware of this a only breeds dogs with no genetic problems and as Lovetodream88 said only dogs that meet the breed standard. I would worry that if she is breeding a dog that is not a standard color that she wouldnt be selective with genetic health issues. Bottom line is that you want to feel that you can really trust your breeder. I want you to be very happy with your future yorkie :) I can tell you that once you do find the right pup you are in for such a treat. Yorkies are the most amazing dogs. I have had other breeds but none have come close to capturing my heart the way that my little girl has :) Can I ask how much the breeder is asking for the pups? Hope that we are helping with your concerns and welcome to YT!!! |
Unfortunately, it's impossible to guarantee how big a Yorkie puppy will be as an adult. The only way to be sure that your dog won't be over 5 lbs is to get a Yorkie who is fully grown. The general rule of thumb is to double their weight at 12 weeks, but that doesn't always hold true. Good luck in your puppy search, and as you've been advised, it's best for toy breeds to stay with their moms until they are at least 12 weeks old. |

Red leg yorkies are often used in breeding to retain a stronger colour in the coat. Many of us got our yorkies before 12 weeks and they're just fine. |

Your breeder is using a bitch that is considered a little too small, and a sire that is a red-leg yorkie. Using a red leg yorkie to bring in more color to tan areas isn't something that is routinely done by good breeders any longer. It's not necessary as most good breeders are using either very established lines or have their own lines. The red-leg yorkies coat's are usually very coarse, break easily, and usually don't grow to full length. It's recommended by most good breeders to leave yorkie puppies with their moms until 12 weeks of age. Although, maybe not absolutely necessary to wait until then, I'm always suspect of a breeder that insists on puppies leaving early. If size is of utmost importance to you, as others have suggested, perhaps you could look at young adult dogs. |
I do tend to agree with the oothers who have commented. Have you paid a deposit? Maybe you can still try to find another breeder so you wont be disappointed |
