Needing more advice.... I'm a "newbie", I've posted on the "re-homing" thread and this one about George who I've acquired following his owner's untimely death three weeks ago. I am searching for a forever home for him (unless he and my Stella work things out) but in the meantime I have a few questions for you seasoned Yorkie parents. 1) How much should he eat? Sometimes he does great, other times he picks. I've read a lot about this breed recently- I had no knowledge prior- and am concerned about low blood sugar. My Stella eats three times a day- small portions but it's gone in 2 minutes!!! 2) How should I care for the tear stained fur around the eyes? I see so many of your beautiful dogs and they don't have stains. 3) Bathing in between grooming- plus grooming schedule? I really know nothing and want to do what's best for George. Any advice is most welcome, even if you think I should already know it- no offense will be taken. The input and support I received thus far has TRULY been a Godsend!!! |
What are you feeding, the bags will give you a guideline on how much the dog should eat. How much does he weigh? In general, a four pound dog needs less than a 6 pound dog. Sometimes, the wrong food can cause eye stains and tearing. I switched food once and Joey developed really bad tearing problem, so I switched back to his normal food. Some people have luck with Gerber’s baby water in the gallon. It's purified water with many of the minerals taken out. For some reason, excessive minerals can cause problems. This is a good article on the causes and cures of eye tearing. Tearstains. If you are trying to grow a long coat, a weekly bath is a must, some breeders do it more than that. Always us a shampoo made for dogs, and rinse a minute more than you think you need to. A good conditioner is important too, because it conditions the skin, as well as the hair. They need a more through grooming about every 6 weeks to 2 months. |
If he is not a puppy he should not have a low blood sugar issue unless something is wrong with him. Callie is a picker so I leave her food down all the time. |
Thank you both. He is eating Fromm Four Star Nutrionals (chicken and veggies)- this was the food his owner was feeding him. I've never heard of it before. I feed my Stella the brand BLUE and have had good luck. I'm hesitant to switch foods- don't want to upset him anymore than he already is but I also don't want to feed him junk either. He has that short cut on the back with a full head, chest and longer length on the legs. I'd like to keep him that way just a tad shorter on the belly as he gets wet when he goes to the bathroom :) Thanks again!!!! |

Joey’s breeder grooms him and she shaves the belly, but leaves a “pee string” this acts as a wick to direct the urine in a stream rather than splattering all over the place. |

If he's not eating his food, you can try mixing it with just a little bit of warm water to make a 'gravy'. My Lucy is a picky eater but she will eat every time if I do this. |
About Bathing/grooming. I bathe Callie weekly and she goes to a professional groomer when I feel she is needing a cut which I normally wait to long for because she looks like a teddy bear when she is all shaggy. I keep Callie in a puppy cut and its suggest that I take her in for grooming every 6 weeks. This is a good thing to tell you about how much he should be eating Dog Food Calculator. Sorry I forgot to post this last night I was late night tired posting lol. |
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! A puppy cut looks as if it's short all over, correct? I'm thinking I might like that on George. |

Tear stains.... I pat Piccolo's corner of her eyes at least once a day (usually twice a day) with a wet wash cloth to get out the goop. Then I gently work on the rest with my fingers. I think it is just easier to keep up with it on a daily basis, especially because her hair on her head is so light. Hope this helps with one of your questions. Good luck with George and hope things work out. |
Thanks again. I've been cleaning his eyes every morning- seems to be working. I think I'll go with the puppy cut. |

Oh my gosh- I am so struggling here!!! He is asleep on my lap as I reply using my IPhone.... I just replied to Kerri, who heads a rescue, on the initial thread I started. I'm so afraid my Stella might accidentally hurt George in play. Stella has actually come around in the last 24-36 hours. Whatever the end result- you are all a wonderful group of people. I never imagined this level of support or advice. I'm so thankful!!! |
