Hair Loss or Alopecia X We have a yorkie who just turned 7 and she has very thin hair on her back. Her hair is normal everywhere else. Vet ran all kinds of test and said everything was normal and there was no medical problem. She said we could put her on Melatonin and that might help. She weighs 5 lbs. Has anyone used melatonin for there pet before, were there side effects and if I decided to use it, how much and how often do I give it? Thanks |
Was he checked for mites? The vet would have needed to do a skin scrapping and look under a microscope |
Was she checked for Cushings? That would def be a possibility. Thyroid test? My Wylie has Atypical Cushings and hair loss was one of his most obvious symptoms. Testing for Cushings can be a long, tedious process -- but it's treatable...so it's worth looking at. Usually the very first test to run is the Cortisol-Creatinine urine test -- this test doesn't rule in Cushings, but it can rule it out and tell you whether you need to proceed w/ the next steps for testing. :) |
They ran all the test and they came back normal, no medical problems. |
Maybe you could check your vet bill to see exactly what tests were done. Some vets are not real familiar with the issues that the Yorkie can be prone to have. They may have missed something that someone here has had experience with. |
This article talks about Alopecia X and Melatonin. Melatonin is known for establishing the inner clock. I would think living in Fl, with all the sun, you wouldn't have a problem. Also, this seems to work with breeds who shed and have winter and summer coats, Yorkie's aren't known for shedding. Quote:
