Retaining Baby Teeth? Hey guys! I have a question. During a recent vet appointment (I had to take Katie Scarlett in to get her papers saying she was healthy and ok to fly on the plane with me home to Alabama), the vet noticed how she had retained her baby canine teeth on the top...the long pointy ones. She has her baby ones and adult ones right next to each other. He did mention that it was our choice whether to have them removed or not. Well while we were home, I did start to notice how food was collecting between these two teeth. We brush Katie Scarlett's teeth once a day, at night during her grooming before bed time. She isn't the biggest fan of it, but she usually will let me finish without much of a fuss. After brushing, she gets her Mini Blue Buffalo Dental Bone as a treat. She adores these bones and they really do make her breath smell wonderful. So I definitely think the teeth need to be removed to help prevent further dental issues. Although I do brush, I am sure food gets caught in between these two teeth that I cannot get it. So I called the vet yesterday to talk to the nurse about it. She recommended that I wait until Katie Scarlett has her first dental. She said I could have that done when Katie Scarlett was a year or even 2 years. This way Katie Scarlett will have the teeth removed when she is already under for the cleaning, which I agree with. I do not want to put her under anymore than I have to. So I wanted to ask about dentals...when do I need to get this done? Any advice on this subject? I would sure appreciate it. Katie Scarlett is 9 months old now and her teeth (besides the double on the top) look really good. They are very clean, white, and she has pleasant breath. I hope I am doing all I can to take proper care of her teetch, but this is my first Yorkie. I want to do what is best for her. Advice? Thanks guys! Aymee:) |
well i am certainly no expert but i wouldn't think she would need a dental till she was 3 or 4 years old especially since you brush her teeth daily. my shih tzu is almost 3 and her teeth are still white as snow. yorkies may be different though since their mouth is a little smaller. i know that my oscar has lost all his baby teeth except the top two canines. he is 7 months old , i am hoping they come out as well |
Did the adult canine teeth come in recently? When Brutus was neutered, they removed all of his baby teeth. |
they removed cedric when he was neutered as to not have to put him under twice. my vet said that dentals are on an as needed basis and if cedric didnt need it we would not do them until that point. maybe thats wrong?? not sure each vet has a different opinion on these things it seems. |
I'm not really sure when dentals get done, but I do think the baby canines should be removed! Sophia had to get spayed at a young age because she had a inguinal hernia, so I didn't even think to get any baby teeth removed. Sure enough, her two baby canines remained. The vet told us to wait until she goes under for something else like a dental. She actually ended up breaking both baby teeth :(. It's not an emergency, just keep an eye out for it. One day she had two remaining canines. A day later one of them was broken :( a week later the other one was :( so they are fragile and a bit more prone to breakage!!! It still makes me uneasy knowing that she has a small piece of teeth protruding on each side |
My Jilli Ann is 8 months old as of the 15th and is just now going in for a spay, microchipped, on the 5th of May and to have her lower baby canines removed. This is why I waited to have her spayed, just in case this would happen. It's unwise to leave the baby teeth in as it can cause decay or make the permanent teeth go out of alignment. My Zada was 7 in Dec. and has never needed a dental till a few months ago, Azrael was 7 in Jan. and still doesn't need a dental and Razael is 5 and just now could use a light dental. As long as your brushing her teeth, there is no reason why she should need a dental in a year. In fact, I've never known of a dog needing a dental that soon, but then I don't know all dogs. |
Teeth pulling I just had my 7 mo. old Cleo spayed last week and the vet pulled 4 bottom teeth. My groomer who used to breed yorkies, but still shows them asked me when I was going to get her spayed and I already had booked an appointment. He looked in her mouth and pulled a tooth that was barely hanging on. He pointed out the bottom teeth that were causing the adult teeth to grow at a weird angle. If you brush her teeth, had you noticed the double teeth before she was spayed? If so your vet should have advised you about pulling them. My vet didn't even charge me for the teeth removal, since she was already asleep for the spay. |

Same here vet will charge to pull teeth during neuter and from the quote I received a majority will be from the teeth removal. |
If your brushing everyday she might not need a dental for years. I brush Callie's weekly and she chews bones often and she is about to be 5 and has not had to have a dental yet. Waiting can be uncomfortable for her and can cause her teeth to be unlined. |
vet charge I just scheduled the surgery, did not get a quote. I have used this vet for over 30 years. I had her spayed, teeth pulled and micro chipped. It was $199 - when I got home I looked at the receipt and for the teeth removal it had n/c (no charge). There were only 4 to be pulled. I just wanted everything done at one time - less stress on her. She did stay overnight and they said she did not whine or cry at all. I know the vet's prices vary a lot, especially based on location. I hope Katie Scarlett gets her extra set of teeth removed soon. |
Hi, Rambo was neutered almost a month ago and they pulled 3 baby teeth but left the canines because they weren't ready to be pulled. He loves chewing on those nybones and sure enough one of the lower baby teeth came out within a couple of days and the second lower one is loose so it will be gone pretty soon. If the uppers ones don't fall out on their own my vet said it's a simple procedure, he would be under about 20 mins and she would pull the uppers. Try giving something hard to chew on. |
I'm really surprised the vet didn't remove them during her spay. That is what is usually done. |

Kiko's canine teeth took a while to fall out. Her adult canine's were almost all the way in before the baby ones even started to wiggle. They did eventually fall out. Maybe Katie Scarlett's will to? |
