Big uhn and a Lil' uhn 1 Attachment(s) How many of you guys own a large breed dog and a yorkie? My BF and I live separately but when we are at each other's house he brings his dog (Presa Canario puppy) to my house and vice versa for me. Although Zeus is only 10 weeks he is going to be a really big dog. I'm grew up with large breeds so this isn't a concern but I worry about Troy given that he's only 4 pounds. |

There are other threads on here; about large/small dogs living together. I have two big and one small Yorkie. Like anything else with well-trained Large and small dog; it has a better chance of working out. Also you need to be alert to dangerous situations. I like have dogs that are crate trained. That is often usefull, when company comes, or service men, etc. Also I think it is easier with dogs that do not have a high prey drive (particularly the larger dog). Personally I don't allow the big and little to play together. Other than swimming. They go on walks together - but are not let off lead to romp around. IMO it is way too easy for an inadvertent injury. |
Aw so cute! All of our dogs are pretty small in my family, but my BF does own Bulldogs and even though they are not a huge breed people are often surprised that Poppy gets on so well with them. I agree that if they are brought up together they usually get along fine. |
We have a 75lb Boxer and our Georgie that is 4lbs. I haven't ever worried about Coco because she is 6 years older and does so well with other dogs. My concern with a large puppy would be more of Troy getting under his big paws. I have had that concern and usually don't have them run together or play when Coco is standing. They are both adorable:D. |
Troy goes to work with me at times and does well with large dogs in this setting once he gets a good butt sniff in. Troy is pretty well socialized. I think Troy knows to stay out of the way of those massive paws. And we're working on the puppy. He usually won't even play with Troy. He is learning potty training from Troy though which is interesting to see. From my understanding Presa's aren't known to have a high prey drive. |
I have a lab/border collie. He is dog aggressive (rescued from spca) anyway, when I got ziggy He went crazy.. Now they are fine together but I never leave them alone, Im always there. I think your dogs will be fine (if both neutered) especially as they are growing up together. The big dog should be lower in rank though so he never tries to discipline the little Zues, also you guys need to be strong pack leaders. But I really think it can work, just takes discipline and hard work Love the Pic by the way so cute |
I have 2 Boxers and I was nervous at first as well. My Yorkie LOVES them and they love him too. I don't necessarily allow them to romp around in the back yard together but the 3 of them are in the office with me now having play time. The big dogs are older so they are calm and truly have a paternal instinct. I think all dogs are different so you never know how they will adjust but I do think it is a good idea to "socialize" them at a young age. I bet Zeus and Troy will be best buddies. |
