Wow, you must have been busy, how did they all get it, do you have any idea? We decided to not give the shot this year, and I'm still worried about that. Glad everyone's better and Jazzie is back to her old diva self! | Hi Nancy,
Yes, I know exactly how they all got it, and sadly, it was my own fault. After we lost Dottie on February 4th of this year to cancer and a secondary infection, we were totally crushed. After a lil while, I decided to adopt a rescue dog from a kill shelter, this is also how Miss Dottie came into our life 10 years ago as well. Our boxers have taken it pretty hard as well, and Elijah is older and not able to keep up with out younger boxer Gracie to well. I thought getting another furbaby Gracies age would be good for both of them, Gracie would have a sibling her own age with the same energy and could play her heart out, and Elijah could be the old man he is and just rest on the deck and enjoy life without having Gracie always wanting him to romp and play. Needless to say, it all back fired in our faces. Gracie and the new furgirl wanted to kill one another, HATED each other something fierce. So, the next day, we had to take the new furgirl back :-( I had named her Hope, in hopes that she would help our hearts to heal some. Hope didn't show any signs of being sick at all, but a few days after taking her back, Elijah came down with an awful cough, the worst I've ever heard a human or furkid ever have. Off to the vet we went, and sure enough, he had kennel cough :-( Doc said he'd put money on it that Hope had it and that's where Elijah got it from. I don't take them off our property a lot, basically just to go to the vet, and out property out back is all privacy fenced in. Kennel cough is air born to though, so it could have came from somewhere else, but highly doubtful. 2 days after Elijah came down with it, Gracie got it, then a few days after that, Mags got it. I felt like a walking pharmacy let me tell ya!! And I also felt awful in every way. Trying to help Elijah and Gracie with losing Dottie, trying to help ourselves heal some, and trying to give another furkid a forever, happy and loving home, but then having to take her right back the next day, it was a complete disaster :-( I am happy to say though that Hope did get adopted by another family and didn't get euthenized. Over $400 in meds later, I'm learning to just let God handle our hearts. Losing Dottie isn't a pain that will likely ever go away, but He carries us through the hurt every day, and I have faith He always will. Knowing we have 4 other furkids we'll have to say goodbye to again one day, I just don't know if I have the heart to ever get another one. When I love, I love deep and hard, and losing Dottie has just torn us all to pieces and I just don't know if I can ever open myself back up again to love like that and have to give them back to God again one day. I took things into my own hands and 3 of our 4 furkids got very, very sick cause I "thought" I was doing the right thing. Lesson learned.... Oh and just to let ya know, even if they have the vaccine for kennel cough, that CAN still get it. Didn't know if you knew that or not. Good luck with your, I wouldn't wish that on anyone!! |
