Help with giving medicine Any hints on giving liquid meds to your little ones? Oliver is fighting me tooth and nail with this. Of course the vet just told me to squirt it in his mouth with the syringe...uuummm not gonna happen. Thanks! |
What medication is it? Many medications regardless of form I find can easily be mixed with some canned dog food. Problem here arises if it's very strong flavored. Another problem is some medications shouldn't be given within 1-2 hrs of food. |
Do you have an "assistant", like hubby or son, or bf? With help it will be easier...Your assistant holds Oliver up in his/her arms, against their chest. You gently grasp Olivers muzzle in your left hand, hold his mouth shut, slide the syringe inside his lips, WAY to the back of his mouth...there is a place at the back of his jaw where you can squirt the medication inside his mouth, and rather than "squirting it down his throat " so that he chokes, it goes inside his mouth at the back of his mouth and he instinctively swallows...dont let his mouth go until you see him swallowing, you can stroke his throat so he swallows....then when you let his mouth go, imediately give him a treat to reward him taking his medicine and to get the taste out of his mouth! |
Its Ivermectin. I'm supposed to give him .1mL the first three days and then increase in increments of .1mL every third day until we reach .6mL. Its just Oliver and I so I don't have an "assistant"... wish I did. |
When my mom had to give Sammy liquid medicine she used a syringe and infused it into a soft dog treat. |

My Sammy used to take a liquid medicine every day and when he saw me with the syringe he would hide his head in his blanket!! Anyway, I would squirt the liquid into the palm of my hand and he would lick it off my hand. Good Luck! Sometimes it's so hard to get them to take their medicine. |

Dudley is on antibotics right now and I am having a problem. He will not eat his canned food because he knows I put it in it. The easiest way is to let my husband hold him and just squirt it in his mouth. Good luck. They can be stubborn little buggars. |
Given most people don't have muzzles for their yorkies....BUT if you do have a muzzle I have found that putting the muzzle on and putting the syringe on the side of the mouth like you would if you had a helper works fairly well. And then I take it off after she has licked up what she could spit out just by trying to get more of it out she licks it. :) And give her lots of treats. :) I don't have a muzzle that fits my smaller one and she just had surgery so we were going through the meds thing and mostly it was fighting trying to convince her I was calm and to be calm. That is also a helper, if you can stay calm. My girls can definitely feel my nervous energy and they get nervous, so even if I am nervous about doing thing for them I do my best to stay calm (ie. meds, nail clipping, brushing teeth, etc) I also found if you squirt it all at once it is better than a little at a time. With a mouth full Somi was much more inclined to have to swallow than with little bits she could spit it out. Good luck with giving your meds. :) |

I just got done giving Mags 2 weeks worth of three different meds, all were pill form of course, but I put it in enough water to disolve it, and then added it to blueberry yogurt and she ate it all up with no problem. When giving meds to my late Miss Sqeeker, I added the meds to some canned cat food and she ate it with no problem. |

I just went through this with our little man Bentley ( 9 months old...3 lbs) he is VERY wiggly to say the least! ....It was HORRIBLE to get the meds into him...I had hubby hold him, head against hubbies chest...hold onto the hair under his chin, which would open his mouth a bit and squirt the meds into the corner of his mouth...this would make him lick and he would swallow...if hubby wasn't around I would put him on the counter, wrap my arm around him and do the same thing...OR ....he LOVES being inside my bathrobe...when he's inside he can't move (I have a tie on it and tie it rather tight so he doesn't fall out) again....hold onto the hair under his chin and just squirt it in...don't do it too slowly...just SQUIRT! down the hatch it will go... |
I got a little syringe tube for my pups. It only holds 1ml of fluid. It is super thin and easy to put in the mouth - you only have to pry it open an little bit. Abby sometimes acts like I am pulling her toenails out, but other times she just squirms. Max, he just lets me do it. I usually have to hold their mouth until they swallow it - Abby will try to spit it out. We only have to do it from time to time, so not a regular event. You may feel bad doing it, but you know it is for his well being (even if he does not and give you those "don't you love me" puppy eyes). Good luck! |
