New member Hi there everyone, My name is Leigh and I have never had a dog before as a pet. My husband and I decided to get a dog for our family. I have gone to the library and checked out as many books as they will allow on breeds and care. We have decided to buy a yorkshire terrier or possibly a terrier mix but know this is a life long decision (well at least a decade or two) so want to know as much as possible going in to it. I look forward to learning through the forum. (I loved a forum like this for new moms after I had my babies) :) Blessings, Leigh |
Welcome to YT! You will be amazed all you can learn here there is a vast of knowledge. You will love yorkies they have to be one of the most loving dogs we have ever had. |
WELCOME :):):)! Yorkies are so much fun. They have the greatest personalities, and each one is so different than the next one. I think you'll love having a yorkie. Or rather, I should say: I think a yorkie would love owning you :p. Bc they pretty much do. When do you think you'll get one? |
You came to the right place. Welcome |
Hi there and welcome, yes yorkies are wonderful. |
Welcome to the world of Yorkies. I can not tell you how much I have learned from the generous inexperience folks here. Additionally, be sure to pick a breeder who is "there for you" when the first questions come. Best of luck and we will want pictures! |
:)Welcome to YT! Glad you found this site. No better place for all things yorkie !:yorkietal |
Welcome to YT! Happy you found us. You will get a lot of great advice from very knowledgable folks here. |
:D First all I would like to give u 2 :animal-pa:animal-pa up for researching & asking around before you adopted a "pet"! Next I would like to say welcome to YT! |
Welcome to YT. What a smart lady you are to do your investigation up front. There is in the "blueshaded" section a Library of wonderful articles here. Some entitled New puppy owner, how to select a reputable breeder, vaccination protocols for the toy dog (especially the toys). Also as you mentioned children there have been many threads on here, that discuss in varying degrees of emotive enthusiasm, the pros and cons of Yorkies with children. The search feature here should provide you with some threads that discuss this. Just note; that it is not uncommon for breeders not to place their puppy with a family with young children. How young is young? Well of course that is going to be a matter of opinion that can and does vary across the board. If you have never owned a dog before; then it is highly recommended that you get if they are not already, your children used to and trained to be around dogs. Meet the breeds at various dog shows is one opton. Volunteering at your local SPCA - shelter is another good option. Hanging out with friends with dogs is great. Start to "learn the lingo" of doggy obedience etc. A final thought on children and dogs is: "the younger the child, the bigger the dog should be". Consider a yorkie when full grown may be about 7lbs or less, some grow larger and some can remain quite tiny. It is relatively easy to injure a dog of this size. What an exciting time for you and your family. I wish you the best of luck in your research. |
Welcome to YT. Good luck on your decision. Yorkies are a special dog for sure. I've had several dogs in my day and Bailey is certainly the best one ever. He's such a part of this family it's hard to imagine life before he arrived. |
Ugh! Yorkies are a terrible decision! (just kidding) ;) They'll rob you of your bed, leaving you to sleep on a 3" x 6" corner of your mattress. You'll melt uncontrollably every time they look up at you with those big, black eyes. You'll spend endless amounts of money on dog clothes just to have them roll in the dirt with their sunday dress on. Your friends have to stand because your Yorkie is sleeping peacefully on the couch. You'll resign to eating macoroni and cheese because your yorkie needed a new dog bed (the other 6 weren't good enough) or that new grooming brush looks gentler on her fur than the last 3 you bought. You'll develop carpal tunnel because the urge to constantly pet them is just too strong. Your IQ will drop dramatically when you begin speaking to your yorkie in either baby talk or like a human and you'll be convinced they understand (throw your sanity in there too) You'll leave work early to check on your Yorkie, call the pet sitter every hour when you're out of town and have your vet on speed dial just because the mere thought of something being wrong is unbearable. Your moisturizer will be replaced with dog saliva and somehow you're ok with this. Did I miss anything ladies? |
