conditioner help I was told by Sophie's veternarian and the breeder that I have to use a tear-free shampoo (Sophie was 12 weeks at the time and is now almost 4 months old). I bought some puppy tear-free shampoo and it dried out her hair and skin. So then I bought a recommended puppy shampoo + conditioner tear-free version and it was better but I was still not happy with the results. I have long thick hair myself and shampoo + conditioner combos just don't cut it...I need a separate good conditioner after shampooing or my hair is full of tangles and not as soft and silky! If I make sure it does not go on her head can I use regular dog conditioner on my puppy? Can I use a human conditioner? Does anyone have a brand they can recommend? At what age can she start using regular dog shampoo and not the tear-free kind? |
I have always used tearless shampoo on just their heads and the nicer coat shampoo on the body.(I use minksheen) The puppy shampoo just seems too harsh and not so longlasting fresh- and sometimes puppies really need freshening;)! Most important is to rinse and rinse- hard to do when they wiggle so, good to have a extra person to lend a helping hand. |

Joey's breeder recommended that I use Biogroom shampoo and conditioner. I believe all their shampoo is tear free. Dogs don't always close their eyes, so a tear free shampoo is important. It's great gentle product and is easy to rinse out. Dry flakey skin is generally caused by not rinsing enough, so always be looking for this. She also recommended their cream rinse conditioner, it promotes healthy skin. For a free sample of the products just email the Biogroom company, the samples they send are highly concentrated so mix with 4-7 parts water. Email the company here. I do know that you cannot use a human shampoo without doing damage long term. We don't always see the results of damage, until months later. If you use a human conditioner, just make sure you rinse it out throughly. |
I just use pantene or loreal Vive and it leaves there hair silky and soft. Ive een using it for years now |

Many of the regular non natural shampoos use a detergent and sudsing agent that strip the skin and fur of natural oils. Your pup is old enough to use a good all natural pet shampoo and conditioner. Using the tearless on just the face may help. Using a tearless product that ruins the coat is not going to be helpful. Human shampoo and conditioner is made with a different Ph level than is need by your pet. Not a good idea to use human products on pets. |

Thanks for Gemy's info...I would love to try some great speciality shampoo made for Yorkies. I know you also mentioned rinsing well and I just want you to know that I did (probably overly rinsed her). I do think it just wasn't the right shampoo for her puppy hair. I will remember to mention to Gemy that I am a pet owner and not going to be putting Sophie in shows...I love my little Sophie but a $3000 bill would give my husband a heart attack! I'm also excited to try the Pantene and L'Oreal Vive that chachi recommended. |

We use Cloud Star Buddy Wash and Buddy Rinse and it works and smells great. Even for my Biewer Reesie, his coat is cottony and dreadful and it leaves him soft and manageable. You really gotta work in the conditioner, maybe let it set in a min a two with a massage or while cleaning out their eyes. We have also used Minksheen and like that one too. :) Viv |
