Leather ear suggestions desperately needed Hi everyone, I am new member to this site and need your help. I have read all of the threads on here re: leather ear but nothing so far seems to be working. My yorkie named Nora started out with black outlines around her ear borders at the end of Feb. of this year. She has lost a lot of the hair on her ears and the inside of her ears have since turned black. I am going to list everything I've tried with her....most are suggestions I've gotten from this site. -used rubbing alcohol 2x per day and then put lotrimin regular strength 2x per day on inside of ears. - used all systems tea tree oil on her ears 2x per day. I put it on using a Qtip. - I'm now washing her ears everyday with head and shoulders shampoo. I let the shampoo sit on her ears for 5 to 10 minutes. I do put the tea tree oil on in the morning and at night I wash her ears and put the lotrimin Ultra on at night. I do dry her ears completely with a blow dryer before putting on the lotrimin Ultra. I started all of this at the end of Feb. I just havent seen too much improvement. Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me some suggestions? I am really getting worried. I dont know of there is something else I should be doing. Thank you everyone in advance. I have truly valued reading all of the previous posts on this site. -melissa |
Lolo had this when we got her...we did the alcohol 3 times a day and also the lotromine 3. Hers when we did the alcohol would actually come off black like a mold on the cotton balls I would work on them until the cotton was clean. |
I don't have any advice to offer, but I want to welcome you to Yorkie Talk, Melissa. |
I don't have any first hand experience with this, but I do remember reading that running a dehumidifier in your home can help. What has your vet recommended? |
Just curious if you have been to the vet? About 5 years ago my girl started getting black on her ears, especially around the edges, and I was treating her for leather ear. It turned out to be cutaneous vasculitis instead and she still has scars from this. Anyway, not saying your pup has this, but I always think it is a good idea to make sure to look at all the possibilites. |
Thank you for all of your replies and welcoming me to this site! I really appreciate it. The vet I take her to didn't know what this is. My guess is leather ear but maybe it is vasculitis. Do you know the difference between a dx of leather ear vs vasculitis? I will say some of the black has come off of Nora's ears so that's why I was thinking leather ear. It just all happened so suddenly...like one morning she woke up with black outlines around her ear borders. Does anyone think I should take her to an animal determatologist? Thanks again for all of the responses. I really appreciate it. |
Hello and welcome, sorry I don't have any advice either... |
When my Sammy had it we used Lotrimin cream (people medicine) on it and it cleared up quickly and never came back. You can buy it over the counter at the pharmacy or supermarket. Good Luck! |
If I were dealing with this problem, I would ask my vet if Shapley's M-T-G could be used. It is a product most comonly used by horsemen, but it is also labeled for dogs. I have used it with great results on horses for stubborn skin conditions including fungus. Even though it is labeled for dogs, I would still consult my vet before trying it. (I have had it on my skin too and it does not burn like alcohol and tree tee oil can.) Here is what the website says: Original M-T-G has been providing quick and effective relief from numerous skin ailments since 1938! Originally formulated for humans, this safe and easy to use product is the only one needed for relief from a variety of bacterial and fungal skin problems, such as : • Rain Rot • Scratches • Girth Itch • Sweet Itch • Dry Skin • Tail/Mane Rubbing Original M-T-G provides results after just one application! Great suggestions...thanks so much! I will have to ask my vet about that. I have been using Lotrimin consistently and the All Systems Tea Tree Oil and I just don't understand why it's not working. I will ask my vet about what you suggested. I will start using a dehumidifier and see if that helps as well. Again thank you so much for all of the advice and recommendations...Nora and I truly appreciate it! |
