long hair and the beach... We went to the beach this past Monday. For some reason I've always thought u couldn't bring ur dog, but people were there with theirs on leashes. It is so beautiful right now and I like the idea of taking Allie. I'm not sure how she would do but willing to try. Her hair is medium to long especially towards her rear. Allergies and scratching has caused hair breakage so its not really even all over. Matts can b a problem she's a little tomboy. Is the sand and water something I would even dare? Or am I asking for a big mess when I get home? :0 Cutting her short is not an option. I luv luv her longer or should we look for other extracurricular activities? ;) |
I know lots of people take their dogs to the beach, and they probably do have a mess when they get home. I think corn starch would be great for getting out sand and snarls before bathing. Just sprinkle corn starch on and brush, I know it also works on mats. We use to use baby powder, but it has talc in it and the corn starch is probably safer. |
Well despite what Nancy said. Here is how I cope with long hair and the beach. Pleaes keep in mind I have a show boy who is in wraps and swims in them. For you I suspect it will be simpler. a) make sure your dog is fully brushed out before beach time; meaning no mats anywhere. b). Before you are ready to go home, bring the dog into the water with you, and finger comb out their hair to get that dratted sand out. Leave at least 5-10 minutes for this activity. c) Then pick up your dog out of the water and carry him to the car, where you can wrap him in towels. I also use a spray mist of oil on the coat to help the brush out. |

Thank you both for the suggestions. Like I said I luv her long hair but sometimes feel like she's missing out on fun water activities for my selfish reasons. I've tried corn starch maybe I'm not doing it right or don't have the patience. I like the oil mister idea not sure at all how to wrap the hair but maybe a few strategicly placed pony tails? Thinking the oil it would keep the hair smooth and resistant to tangles. Maybe a leave in conditioner? I should bite the bullet and try what's the worst that could happen, she gets some knots by the time we get home she will be tired and not argue with my fussing and brushing. :) |

Awh a beach goer if Ca means close to water for you. Well wrapping takes a lot of time particularly when you are new to it. but put her hair in soft baby style scrunchies. They can be found in Walmart. However it isvery important that the hair is brushed out very well. I will oil the hair before entry' but as he is wrapped in oil, that is usually not necessary. I use a light oil called Moroccan or Argon Oil for his coat. The other trick if the hair on the legs is long, place paws in booties too. It wil also help to protect the paws from hot sand. |
