safe outside in winter? Our puppy is only 11 weeks old, and 1.75 pounds. He is doing well potty training outside, but now he shivers so much from the cold. We wonder if it is even advisable to continue taking him out in the cold? |
Sorry I'm not much help, I'm actually wondering the asme thing for my puppy. She's 12 weeks and 1.5lbs. Just wanted to say hello and welcome to YT. |
Hi guys and welcome to YT! I had the same problem with my yorkie last year-we got her in the middle of the month when she was 4 mos old. I felt so bad taking her out, and on really cold mornings she would just look at me with these pitiful eyes and not do her business. I just couldn't stand it, so I pee-pad trained her inside. I have another Yorkie now, and they are both trained inside and rarely have accidents where they are not supposed to...they are very accurate.LOL Anyway, I think lots of other members' dogs do use the outdoor potty even in the cold months. Maybe they could chime in! |
When I got Luigi last January, it was very cold. We had temps in the teens and even lower!! I felt so bad about taking him out, but he really didn't seem to mind it! In fact, he loved the snow! He would roll around in it and play like there was no tomarrow!! It was sooo cute! But what I would do (and still do since it is very cold again) is always have a big towel in the dryer, then when we go out, I turn the dryer on, so when we come in, Luigi and Brasco have a very warm towel that I wrap them up in and we snuggle til they are nice and toasty again!!!! Brasco is sooo short, that when he peepees, half of his body is buried in the snow! SO when he comes in, he has little snow balls stuck to him! But he seems to be liking the snow!! He head dives in it!! Cracks me up!!!! I wouldn't keep them out for too long each time and have a nice toasty warm towel or blanket waiting for them!!!! |
Mine go outside no matter how cold, but they make it quick. I'm lucky because we have a fenced in yard so I can just let them out and then close the door and stand there and watch for them when they are ready to come back in. Sorry I'm not much help. |

my thoughts... i have 8 adult yorkies. i have my back yard fenced in for them and a door for them in the laundry room which is right off my kitchen. i let my yorkies out each day, cold or hot weather, to potty. they dont stay long of course, but do like to go out and romp and do their business. this works well for me. when it rains i do let them go on piddle pads or paper in the kitchen due to not wanting them wet because the groom out is something else on 8 wet yorkies...when it snows, i let them experience it too..for a bit. ( i dont let them out in sleet though) just get your little one a sweater or jacket. going out in the cold is fine as long as they are able to come right back in when they are done...best wishes, |
