So my Oliver has Demodex "mange" Hey my friends So brief background.... as many of you know Oliver is a rescue from a puppymill and had tons of issues with his paws. After MANY visits to the vet turns out they scraped his feet and it was positive for Demodicosis. I guess in ignorance I'm actually happy about a diagnosis. I just want my little man to get better. Any experience with this? He will be on meds for the next month and then a re check with the vet. Happy Easter to all my Yorkie friends |
Half the battle is getting a good diagnosis, once you have that, treatment can begin. Hope the meds help. |
I don't know much about it but glad you found out and can now treat him. |
Oh, Karla, that stuff can be battled and you can win. I know they used to dip the little dogs in some kind of sulphur solution. I hope you can get rid of it soon. I have heard it is miserable for them. Let us know how he does on the meds. |
It isnt contageous. It is passed from momma to babies. Ivermectin by mouth in icreasing increments until a maintainance dose is reached....on maintianance dose until skin scraping come back negative, then continue on for another month to be sure you kill every single mite. The mites live INSIDE the hair follicle, not on the skin, so you have to treat the mites systemically, as well as with medicated shampoo....finish up with Chlorhexiderm 1:12 strength solution on the affected area, at least twice a day. Do not breed a female that has this, as she will pass it on to her babies. Stress and an immature immune system will bring it out. DO NOT USE CORTISONE ON THE OUTBREAK, IT WILL CAUSE THE RASH TO ABSOLUTELY GO RAMPANT! That is about all I can think of right now..... |
aaw poor little fella, praying for a quick recovery....it will be fine. |
Baby Olive Dear Yorkie Lovers who's dogs have Demodex...My baby Olive has it too- it has been an ongoing battle for four years. I need some help/advice. The medication Interceptor she has been on for the past year is now on backordered/recalled. The Promeris has also been recalled. The main ingredient in these is the Amitraz. Other than the dips, what else can I use? I am scared to use the dips because she scratches her nose and her paws so much that she sometimes bleeds- and I know the dips cannot be used if she has any wounds. I need advice on what else has worked. I feel like she is getting worse by the minute. Thanks for your help! |
IVERMECTIN!!!! Your vet can calculate the dosage for your Oliver, and then start him on Ivermectin by mouth....for example, start at 0.02cc for 3 days, go up to 0.05cc for 4 days, go up to 0.07cc for a maintainance dose for say 6 weeks, do skin scrapings, contine with Ivermectin until you get clean skin scrapings, and then CONTINUE beyond that, for 3 months. Also, twice weekly baths in Demodex shampoo and dabbing affected areas/lesions with a solution of Chlorhexiderm 1cc concentrate/12cc distilled water, twice a day. While your dog is taking the Ivermectin by mouth, you do not have to give heartworm medication. Avoid that dip unless there is NO other option...it is VERY tough on Yorkies/small dogs....this protocol above was effective against this terrible mite on my brothers dog, who was in horrible condition. |
