You are going to have a blast , but yes potty training a yorkie can be challenging at times. Are potty pad and/or litterbox training or is your main goal for outside training ? I guess the easiest way to start is to use an ex pen when you are not there to take her out. On one side line with potty pads and on the other put her bed and toys along with food & water. If you want her to go outside to potty , when you are home you just need to take her out every hour take her to the same spot every time and use a key word such as go potty. It just takes time , don't be surprised if she is several months to a year old before she is potty trained... Good luck and have fun |
Congrats on your new baby. Yes, potty training a new yorkie puppy can be a challenge. Please have patience, patience and more patience. I would definitely start off by not letting him have full run of too large of an area. You will need to watch him closely to see what kind of signs he puts out when he's ready to potty; once you figure these out, you can watch for them and either place him on the pad or take him outside-you could choose to either treat or give him lots of praise when he does go in the correct area. Never scold him for doing it anywhere else, just ignore it if he does. In the begining, I would suggest taking him outside at least every hour and especially after he eats, wakes up from a nap or seems like he is looking for a spot. But the main thing to remember, patience, patience and more patience. It will happen. Good luck. |
New puppy Thanks for that info I think I will try a pen and puppy pads I do want her to learn outside as I have a lovely fenced lawn for her, Her name is Molly she is so pretty don't know how I am ever going to growl at her but know I will have to. I am also planning to take her to puppy preschool classes. |

Just be patient , it does take awhile but she will get it. |
I just wanted to say hello and welcome to yorkie talk... |
I just go my new baby on Wednesday. Potty training is something else. I am trying to train Khloe to go outdoors. I have an older dog and I take her out to watch . We were doing great but yesterday and today have been very challenging. Congratulations on getting Molly! We will both have to have patience with our new babies. |
Molly Thanks for the warm welcome everybody, she is so cute I could eat her lol. might not think that after a couple of weeks cleaning up after her. :) |
Just to say hi. I also have a little Molly and her sister Lilly do potty training 2 at the sane time. Both are 13 weeks and have had them for a couple of weeks now. Am using pads indoors and just started taking out this week cause vaccinations are over. Both are quite good at using the pads although Lilly likes to hide under the table to poo. Molly won't go on the grass yet but Lilly has a few times now. Still having some accidents on the rugs but it's early days and who cares they will get there in the end. I live my dogs more than my flooring Lol |
Congratulations on your new baby! I would love to see a photo of her. |

Molly Hi everybody have had a good day with my baby she has been potty on the lawn twice today such a clever girl. My Cornish Rex cat still doesn't know what to think of her but she loves him. Invested in some puppy pads so have caged off with her bed no crying so I guess she is happy. Will try and upload a photo from my pc in the morning just working on iPad tonight. Cheers Wendy |
congrats on your new baby |
Molly Hi everybody another lovely day with my baby took her to the vet for her first checkup it went very well she weighs a massive 1.2 kg just a tiny dot. She has been very good with toileting today not one mess inside, I guess I am lucky it is still warm and sunny here so she has played outside most the day. I can see why you are all besotted by your babies they are amazing little dogs Wendy |
I remember when I took my two yo the vet the first time to get their injections. Molly was 900gms and Lilly 800gms they were too small to microchip and couldn't get the flea or lungworms treatment. My vet said to wait until they were over a kilo. (2.2lb). They were 8weeks old then. Now are 13 weeks and weigh 3lb and 3.2lb. Doesn't take long for them to grow. |
Molly Hi everybody the love affair continues she is just delightful, we have gone two days without an accident with toileting, isn't she an angel after saying that we will probably have a shocker tomorrow. Took her round to see my grandson this morning she was running up and down the yard with 3 four year olds so is now in her bed on her back sound asleep. |
Welcome to YT! Sounds like she is doing great with potty training just be patient if anything changes. Georgie still has "accidents" and he is 6. We love him beyond words so we clean up and move on;) |
Wow - New Zealand (and Scotland) ! :welcome4: How wonderful that our furbabies bring us together from all over the world! Wendy, I'm so glad to hear things are going well with Molly... sounds like y'all had a beautiful day :) |

Go potty.. praise. lots of praise. then a firm No potty when you catch them doing it in the wrong place. that worked for us.. About the barking, there is a great post on here posted by Theresa Ford.. ill try find it and post you a link |
