Green eyes in pic=silky??
 

Luma's eyes flash green in pics. Does that signify she will be silky or cotton coat? She is 16 weeks old. Is that too young to tell?

They say green = silky.
Riley has always flashed green and he has an awesome silky coat. His hair is so soft it feels like feathers after bath time. Especially his bangs and chest hair!!

I've never heard that. :)

If green = silky does blue = cotton? Ha ha. My Mikki has one of each! :eek::eek: What does that mean?

In my experience red is cottony.

Although I have heard that green=silky coat, my Shelby has the greenest eyes (esp at pic taking time) and she can have quite the fluffy butt if i don't use conditioning products. Of course it problably isn't the norm... :rolleyes:

Great information! A little over my head but I love reading about the history of the breed... Bright steel blue color...very pretty!

My Zada and Razael have the green eye shine and both have silky coats, but Azrael has the pink shine and she is a major cotton coat.

I have a picture of Kacee and another yorkie playmate when they were both very young. We turned off the lights and took a picture of them both in my lap. The little boy's eyes reflected red and Kacee's eyes reflected green. It looks like a Christmas pic!:)

My cotton coated Yorkie has orange eye shine.

Is that just spectrum of red or does orange have any real definition-he does have a VERY cottony coat though-well on his white legs and underbelly-his saddle is very silky, and he has thrown a green eye shine occasionally on one eye.

Maybe he's just a weirdo.

Funny you guys mention this. I took a pic of CoCo just yesterday and she has major "green" shine. I was hoping that I could remove it from the pic like the "red-eye" function, but no luck. I'm gonna read the article that was posted for more info!

Piknic program online has a great red eye removal for pet eyes. Oh and wanted to try this on Kyra because it worked on Laddy but her eyes are just little black dots lol no reflection so I am at a loss now what her coat will be.

The eye shine theories make sense to me, but so many pictures of my boys come out like this:

ETA: Or sometimes both the boys have 2 green/blue eyes, sometimes they have red/yellow eyes. Confusing!

Ok, for the "Yorkie challenged" (like myself), can someone post a pic of silky fur vs cottony? Or can you even tell from the pics? I'm not sure what CoCo's fur is. On the top of her head it's really soft and kinda thin - reminds me of a baby's hair. But the fur on her back is alot thicker - not sure how to explain it.

It rings true for my girls... Tillie has green eyeshine and silky hair, while Bella has red eyeshine and her hair is a little cottony.

I read here once a description that compared the different coat types to needlepoint thread. Silk coats are like the finest silk needlepoint thread and cotton coats are like the cotton thread.

If you baby is under a year old, you may be feeling puppy coat on her body.

Ok, thanks a bunch. CoCo is only 4 1/2 months old. That makes sense. I love her coat just like it is. It's not growing so fast that I have to trim her or get her to the groomers! :rolleyes:

I ndont agree with eye shine theory

Silk coats tend to grow slower than cotton coats, and cotton coats (as well as puppy coat) tend to mat and tangle easier. Cotton-coated pups tend to have more leg/paw hair when they are young. It's hard to describe.

I agree that it isn't 100% accurate or reliable.

I wonder if the one eye one eye green one (red for you orange for me) eye redish is actually mixed coat because Elvis definitely has a mixed coat too.

Is it just me? I have not been able to get a photo with the eye shine? What am I doing wrong??

I do not know how you are trying to take eye shine pix...your process, etc., but if you take a photo in dim enough light for the camera to automatically sense a low light condition and turn on the flash with your Yorkie looking directly at the camera, you should get the eye shine light reflection. You should not get eye shine in bright light because the eyes will not be dilated enough.

The eyes need to be dilated to let more light in (dimmer light) for vision so before you take your photo...say, at night or in a darkened room, just turn on a small lamp if it is too dark to see instead of normal bright room light...or leave a light on in an adjoining room preferably behind them, etc. and allow the pups eyes time to dilate. Don't forget that dogs (and cats) see well in dimmer light...better than us...because their eyes' structure can collect more light than ours under the same light conditions. The flash will constrict their eyes reducing reflection, so take only a few pix and not too close together either. If their eyes do not have sufficient time to re-dilate, you won't likely get the reflection anyway and don't count on being able to take but a very few at a time. Most animals will start to look away after a couple flash photos because it is uncomfortable for them...same as us...and you may not get them looking at the camera after that anyway...maybe for a day or two after. :p

I don't think this is the case because my boys' eyes are not consistent. One picture, the eyes will both be green/blue. Another picture, they will both be red/orange. Sometimes, one of each as posted above, but it is not always the same eyes.

I think lighting, angle, and room colors may affect the outcome.

I do use the flash and I tried again tonight. I have been turning off the lights so it's pretty dark when I take the photo but I'm thinking that since my camera has the red eye reduction, it gives that short pre flash and maybe that is enough that I don't get the eye shine? It's frustrating... Oh well....

Turn the lights off at night and take a pic. See if you get it then.:D
